   I took a cut at making a stove cover to expand the usable space for food preparations; or Yet Another Stove Topper = YAST.   Hope this helps someone with another idea on how to do this easily.
I went the inexpensive way but it turn out pretty good looking and usable. The cutting board is from Walmart and the wood legs are from some scrap I had.  The "non-skid" pads on the legs are from Home Depot. Here are a few pictures to show the results:
