Topic: Fridge will not run on propane Posted: 22 Dec 2021 at 10:21am |
Hello, we have a 2015 model 178 and the fridge will not STAY lit on propane. The burner produces a small blue flame, for about 3 minutes, and shuts off. The tank is full and both shore power and battery are available to power the igniter. Could this be the thermocouple causing the problem? The flame produces enough heat for the thermocouple to glow red. The fridge looks like it may be Dometic model 8005 or 8001,but I have not found the model number plate. Any suggestions?

You can use the search function from this forum which will access a lot of cures for fridge operating problems on the gas mode. Mainly there is an obstruction in the gas line/orifice which has to be cleaned out. Hope this helps.

If you have a compressor use an air gun to blow out the combustion area where the flame is, if not purchase a can of compressed air and do the same, in most cases this should address the issue you are having. Also, if you haven't already done so either purchase a screen set or get some screen from your hardware store to close off the large openings on both panels located behind your fridge and accessible on the outside wall. If it hasn't been done bees, wasps, spiders or similar can build nests or webs either around the combustion area or inside the cooling stack just above the combustion area. Blow both areas with compressed air - hopefully you will be back in business.

As well as the previously listed issues with the orifice, it is possible for the thermocouple itself to have failed. It's an easily replaced part if you are handy, and a not too expensive repair from a competent shop if you're not up to it.

Another item to investigate is the propane hose that goes from the reguator to the front of the pod. I had a similar issue a three years ago, did a bunch of tests and everything checked out until I took the hose off (it was 8 years at the time). When it was taken off a black gooey substance came out of the bottom of the regulator as well as the hose itself. Replaced the regulator and flushed the hose out . . . . . . . have been back in business ever since.
