The Last time we changed our oil in our truck was 21 months ago with full synthetic oil along with a quality oil filter change. The truck has been driven 1,962 miles since last oil change have driven it about 50 miles to 100 miles a month at least 30 miles a trip. The information gauge on the truck says the oil is good and has 81% oil life left should I change the oil? We are getting ready to leave on a 2,000 mile trip towing our camper.

Hi David

We run full synthetic in our F-150 and change it every 5,000 year-round. A couple time we have gone a little over by 500-800 mile and haven't had any problems. My mechanic says to go by mileage not the gauge. For what it's worth.
Have a great trip, our camper is surrounded by a few inches of snow with more coming.

I agree with Leo-full synthetic oil will last longer than traditional petroleum based oils.  5000 miles is fine unless there are extenuating circumstances-mechanical issues, heavy duty(more than an RPod) towing, etc.
We use synthetic oil in our Ford Expedition and change every 6000 miles per the Ford recommendations.

We also use full synthetic on our 2017 F-150 with 3.5EB - change at every 10,000 miles.  Even at this the oil looks pretty clean.  Included with that is the XR (extended range) oil filter is used (WIX brand).

For the last 140,000 miles on our older 1994 F-150 (5.0 V-8 with stick shift) we also used full synthetic, and changed oil at 10,000 mile increments with a WIX filter.  When it was sold 3 years ago it had 322,000 miles on it and had no engine problems.  My neighbor just purchased it and I will be interested to know how many more miles have been put on it over the past three years.

IMHO you are good to go.  Enjoy your trip David.

Thank you for your answers I was told too tonight in church it would be fine. My concern was not the miles but the oil being in the engine for 21 months but it sounds there is no concern. Looking forward to our trip to Florida to visit family and enjoy the warmer weather. It's been a couple of years since we have traveled it will be good to get back out on the road again.

How does it look on the dip stick, is it clean or dirty? if it looks like honey you should be good, if it looks dark brown to black I would change it. Oil really does not go bad, it just gets dirty.  I have a 1961 Sunbeam that I don't put many miles on in a year, so I go by the color of the oil. Have a great trip.

Yes motor oil certainly can go bad. It breaks down over time (beyond just getting dirty) due to viscosity changes from temperature, absorption of humidity, sludge formation, etc. Change it at the manufacturer's recommended intervals for towing service. There is nothing easier or better for engine longevity than frequent oil changes.

Most synthetic oils are rated to last between 10,000 to 15,000 miles, or six months to a year. Manufacturer recommended ratings are typically applied to "normal driving," and don’t reflect severe driving conditions that may require more frequent oil changes.

The oil monitor on our 2015 won't let you go beyond 12 months regardless of mileage. During the pandemic, we only put about 2K miles on it, and we got the alert that we were due for an oil change. Maybe 12 months is too short for a full synthetic on a modern engine, but the small cost of replacing it (at least) once a year is worth it in my opinion.

I had a 2010 Camaro 2SS/RS (which I miss) that required full synthetic 5W-30 and I changed it based on time - once per year - as I didn't put too many miles on it.  Believe it or not, I did two trips in this configuration, which had absolute ZERO rear visibility:

I got a LOT of double-take looks on the highway from passers-by...I'm sure when I traded it in for my '17 Colorado, the Service Manager's first words were "Get that f'in hitch off the car!"

Anyways, my '17 Colorado runs Mobil1 full synthetic, and the 'computer' tells me to change the oil every 3,000...NO DICE, as it still looks like new -- I reset the D.I.C., and only change @ 6,000, or annually, whichever comes first...
