Here's how you can be sure that both brakes are working evenly. Get an IR temp meter, about $30 in Amazon. Make a few runs from 40 mph to about 10 (like you were burnishing but not as agressive) using only the trailer brakes. Stop and check the drum temps with the IR thermometer. If one brake is much cooler than the other then that one isn't working properly.

Don't forget to burnish the new brakes.

Thanks for the reply. Normally I would say you're correct, change them both. But since this trailer has very low mileage, several hundred, but less than a thousand, they're practically new. So, I think they will continute to wear evenly.  There's a lot of meat left on this removed brake, the other should be the same. Thanks for the great comment.

Problem solved. New brake assembly installed, bearings packed, brake controller tested. The magnet on this brake assembly is working, so I know at least one wheel will be braking. I'll check the brake and repack the bearings on the other wheel after our campout this weekend.  Smile

Not sure if you can get them but if I had it to do over I'd try to get nice non self adjusting brakes. You can put them exactly where you want them, and back them off if you get them too tight. The stars are set up to turn either way as well, go figure.

If you don't get the parts locally for this weekend trip you might want to try on line with e-trailer.  They have a lot of parts on line and very helpful videos.  Hope this helps

Hello brewPod.

You said you were off to buy a new brake assy...I may be out to lunch but would it not be prudent to replace both brake assemblies at the same time?

This keeps both sides exactly the same.

Just a thought, and good luck in your re-installation...it should be way easier with all the old, rusty parts replaced.

Not sure which spring you are talking about, but I would try a local parts store before ordering a whole new brake unit.  Try this one just for giggles, https://www.autozone.com/brakes-and-traction-control/brake-return-spring-kit

Ok, I got the hub assembly off with the help of some penetrating fluid and prying. The nut turns easily now. I broke off the internal spring while prying this off, so the pad is not sitting flush, therefore I cant really get the nut to stay in it's intended position to try and figure out WHY it wouldn't turn. Oh well, off to buy a new brake assembly. Thanks for the replies and following along.Smile

Once you bind up the self adjusters they are really tough to loosen. The problem is that the teeth are really it intended to work to tighten the brakes. Not much to pry against to loosen them. As StephenH suggests at this point it's best to get the drums off and inspect/loosen everything. The problem is the drums are hard to get off once the brakes are off.

While you have them apart check the magnets to be sure they are worki g properly. You'll need a multimeter on the ohms scale for that. Look up the brake troubleshooting procedure on the Lippert website.
