Topic: Wiring for Series Battery Install Posted: 05 Mar 2021 at 2:15am |
I'm converting my batteries to two 6 volt Interstate batteries from Costco. I have two questions. First one what size wire do I need to run between the positive post on on one 6 volt to - on the negative post on the other one when I hook them up in series? Second question. Can I just use the same wiring to supply the power to the rpod, or does it need to be modified to support 2-6 volts hooked in series? I'm assuming I can use the same wiring because both setups, the old and the new are the both 12 volts systems.

Answers:
you could use any wire of the same size or larger than the ones leading to the trailer panel. Bigger is better to reduce voltage drops. I used a pre-made 2 gauge jumper on mine. How you will be enclosing the batteries in their box(es) will determine the jumper length you need. Yes, just use the same output wires but of course connect them one to each battery. |

Agreed. You can find a jumper at any automotive parts stores that will be okay for use. Just be sure to get one long enough to fit if you are putting the batteries in separate cases. Offgrid is correct. The positive wire for the RPod connects to the positive on one battery. The jumper between the negative on that battery and the positive on the second battery and the negative to the RPod connects to the negative on the second battery. You can add a cut-off switch also on the positive side while you are at it if it does not already have one. That will help if you have to store the RPod for any length of time without available power or if you have to drop it off at the dealer for some work. My mods will show how I mounted mine in the lid of the case I was using at the time.

If you connect the closer two battery terminals and run the output wires to the outer ones then the battery series jumper can be shorter. That’s how mine is, but you need to confirm the output wires will reach.

I agree. This is how the dealer set it up. I think the shorter connector wire makes sense.
