Topic: Towing with Honda pilot 2015 Posted: 15 Feb 2021 at 9:02am |
We have an R-Pod 179 which we tow with a 2015 Honda Pilot and we are thinking of upgrading to the Pod 192. The 192 has a tongue weight of 440 lbs and the Pilot has a max tongue weight of 450. Honda does not recommend a weight disbrutiion hitch so I am unsure about getting the 192 and towing it with the Pilot. Any advice? Does anyone tow a 192 with a Honda Pilot
Thanks! Paul

We own a 2015 Honda Pilot. We also own a 179 R Pod. However, I personally don't think the two coexist well as a tow vehicle/trailer combo. Particularly if you are on long distance trips or mountains.
The Honda's weight limit is 5000 which is too close to the max weight of the pod for any safety margin. Plus, the max gross weight of the Honda leaves little room for cargo and passengers. One of the other problems is the size of the gas tank-we had to stop every 1.5 hours for gas. The transmission and brakes are marginal with that much weight. Overall, I love my Hondas (it's the third Pilot we've owned), but it is not a suitable tow vehicle for the pods. Vann

If you are like most, the weight of the RP179 is close to, or even over the limit for your Pilot. The RP192 will be worse. probably not a good path to go.

My Highlander tows my 179 ok as long as I watch my weights. And Toyota allows use of a WDH which I use. I wouldn’t consider towing a 192 with it.
That 440 lb published tongue weight is not realistic. It will be significantly higher than that. I’ll bet your 179 tongue weight is about 450 or higher as well, mine is right at 500 lbs and I have to work to keep it there. For sure, get a higher capacity tow vehicle if you upgrade to the 192. At least 6500 lbs tow capacity/650 on the hitch. Then weigh the loaded trailer and rig so you have real world data not FR’s optimistic numbers.

+ 1 to the suggestions that the Pilot is not a good TV for a 192. You'll be well over the Pilot's capacity. Consider a pickup or an SUV with an adequate margin of error for the weight you'll be towing. What OG suggested would be a minimum.

Thanks for all the replies - you are confirming my thoughts on the 192.
However, we have towed our 179 over 10,000 miles with a Pilot 2015 and have done very well but we have not done extended mountain travel. I am careful about weight and we have a good braking system so it has gone well so far.

The 192 is a larger trailer, what suited your 179 is not necessarily good for a 192. IMHO you need a different TV. I think you already know that.

+1 to mcarter. A 5000 lb rated TV is ok for a 179 as long as you don’t go too crazy with “stuff”. My TV is rated st 5000 and I take my 179 into the Appalachians frequently. The 192 is another level entirely.
