Topic: propane detector Posted: 04 Jan 2021 at 10:40am |
I have had the 179 unplugged and the batteries out hooked up to a solar trickle charger. I plugged everything back in so we could use the rPod as an annex. The propane detector started chirping every now and then, and the light flashes between red and green. Unplug either 110 or batteries and the chirping continues. Unplug both and it goes away. Propane is not hooked up. Do I need a new propane detector?

Chirping in such a detector usually indicates that the backup battery is low/dead, assuming that the unit has one (which I would think it should).
I suspect that when you disconnect all power there is no juice to feed the chirps...

Our propane detector did the same thing after 7 years, replaced it and has been fine for the last 3 years.

Those Detectors have a sticker on them that says replace after 60 months of use. An out of warranty device can cause you insurance issues. I replaced mine around five years when it started randomly chirping. Chirping or not it should be replaced every 60 months if it works as required.
Recently a case where military family rented a RPod from Fort Campbell, detector was not working, family suffered fatalities.

Is the chirping related to the detector timing out, going bad, or what? In my various detectors they've always been related to the backup battery going.

I could agree, but for the case when mine started to chirp randomly and was over the 60 month mark, I replaced it. My battery was good. No issues with new detector, except when there is a monoxide issue.
You don't want a detector out of warranty, too much liability.

That is very sad news, just awful. Do you know what the source of the CO was?

OG, the fort got very quiet on the case. We never heard exactly what the cause was or what the penalties were. I do know there was legal action and the case was settled.

Wow, that’s just terrible. It’s a reminder to all of us to be careful when running the furnace, space heaters, and when using the stove, and to keep the CO detector functional. Never hurts to have some ventilation.

+1, This detector has to work and has to be in warranty period. Everyone I have seen is labeled at 60 months. Replace it.
