Ebay to the rescue. I can now tell how the battery is doing and when I have a major draw. You can also add USB outlets if you need them, but there are two already.

That one uses a Hall effect donut. Those tend to drift and are sensitive to stray magnetic fields. For a permanent installation use a current shunt, more accurate and stable. 

Like this one:


Save the Hall effect devices for clamp on meters for testing purposes where the convenience is more important and you can zero them every time.
