Topic: Decals & Exterior Posted: 19 Jul 2020 at 8:23am |
Has anyone ever had to replace their rpod decals, and if so- where did you order them from? We are new owners of a used 2010 rpod 172 and need to either replace the ones that were peeling off at the time of purchase (they’ve now been completely removed), or we need to figure out how to get the adhesive off without ruining the siding and paint the entire pod. Which brings me to my next question: what type of paint would be needed on the laminated aluminum?

We took all the stickers off our 2009 172. It was a tedious job and due to paint fade the image never really went completely away. GooGone, WD-40, acetone, and alcohol all helped get the glue off, but peeling the damaged stickers off requires mechanical scraping. I used a window razor blade scraper, but it is really easy to gouge the gelcoat and paint. As for paint that will stick, your best bet is to check with a good automotive body shop that works with fiberglass.
We left our Pod naked and I really liked it better. There is no added value to the stickers insofar as your camping comfort is concerned. You will be looking for other mods and replacement of basic systems that will keep you busy when you're not camping.
Good luck with the 172. They are very nice original concept Pods.

Thanks so much! I think we will start with the wd40 approach when we get back home today! We weren’t crazy about the idea of putting new decals on her, but we wanted to price it to see which would be more cost-effective: that, or painting it. But I’ve read where some people have had to replace the stickers multiple times...
Thanks again for the reply!

Careful use of a heat gun (or hair dryer) helps.

I removed 90% of decals, just too busy for me. Looks cleaner. WD40, Acetone, low heat, used a hard plastic scrapper that body shops use. Might need a razor scrapper, be careful. I like it with less decals, and no worry about wearing ugly decals. Mine took awhile in sun to make outside uniform and lose decal outlines. Looks good.

That’s another thing- will the sun lines fade after while? If so, I’d be just fine with keeping it white. That’s honestly what we would paint it anyways. Thank you for your response!

And for the record- we have already removed all decals. It’s just the left-over adhesive to deal with now

That's the hardest part and takes the most time. I parked mine in the sun and let the adhesive weather a bit. The outlines of the decals have faded. I did use some rubbing compound and a buffer to help blend the surface.

You can try a little gentle heat from a heat gun and see if that helps soften the adhesive. It did for me. Don't overheat or you can harden it or damage the surface.

I also used heat but very carefully. I forgot to mention it.
