I am going to take the batteries out of my 179 and install a harbor freight box with a lid then reinstall. With the batteries out can I safely plug the trailer in to 110?

yes, you sure can. just tape up or otherwise protect the positive connector so it doesn't short to the frame accidentally.

+1 to taping up the positive lead to prevent shorting. If you already have a battery cut-off switch on that cable, you could turn that off instead, but it never hurts to take the belt-and-suspenders approach and tape up the positive terminal also. You know, just in case.
