Anyone using any other type awnings on their pods ? R dome sort of a hassle IMHO.

We got the Thule awning from the factory when ordering the pod last year because my wife and I didn't want to set the R dome up every time we wanted a little shade and then storing the dome especially if is wet.  We are very happy with our decision.

I had built an awning (see my mods) which we used before our RPod had to go to the factory for repairs from an accident. While it was there, I was able to get the manual Thule awning installed because the whole side needed to be replaced. Our 179 originally had the Keder rail for the R-Dome, but ours did not come with one. I've been very happy with the Thule awning as it suits our style of travel and camping better. I was able to pick up the Gardenline Pop-Up Gazebo from Aldi that is like the Clam a few weeks ago for a bargain price of $99 (plus tax). I used it on our recent trip and it is a great addition to the travel kit as it is very easy to set up and take down by myself.

If 'Weird is relative', 'hassle' is even more so.

10 minutes of work and you have an extra room, awnings are just that, an awning.

R-dome is NOT perfect, not first class tent material, but much better in my opinion than any awning.

They now offer an awning add on that encloses the awning area just like the dome. I am going to buy one, either in the fall, or in the winter months. Although all it would take is one bad night of mosquito's of biting flies and I might have it next week, lol.  I didn't expect to have a 195 till next year either.

What works best for us is an REI screenroom that can be set up away from the Pod, but we also use a home made awning for shade and rain cover.
Life is good.

I got “the clam” from Amazon. I like it MUCH better than the rdome. Takes all of 30 seconds to put up if that and is fully bug proof and contains our Pomeranian as well, You can put it where it’s convenient or has the best view, take it down to the beach or lake. If a tstorm is coming it can be dropped flat in 10 seconds so it won’t blow over of sustain wind damage. There are several sizes and the smaller ones are lighter and more compact than an rdome. You can get rain/wind panels which keeps it dry inside from blowing rain.

Where do you camp in the South where y'all don't need a screen room? I'd like to find that place.  Either that or you can buy DEET by the gallon, but I get a really nasty rash from DEET products, and I hate picking skeeters out of my BBQ. Thumbs Down
