We are currently planning our summer trip this year which entails going to Vancouver Island, BC.  How difficult is it to make reservations at the provincial parks and how do we go about this?  We are looking at some time close to the end of August as we are going to a Pod Rally in Cannon Beach, OR.

Have you considered crossing from Port Angeles? Much less crowded than Seattle.  the interior of Vancouver Island is much like the South Island of NZ.

I guess I need to clarify this.  We are planning on crossing from Port Angeles and coming back via Anacortes.  I don't think I'd mind visiting with ents and elves but I would like to avoid the orcs and wargs.

Now, how about some information about how to register for the provincial parks?  Or is that where the orcs and wargs are?

Wargs got a bum rap I think, kinda like pit bulls. They're just nice big doggies underneath. Its all about how they were raised. LOL The only wildlife issues I recall running into in the Vancouver Island area were yellow jackets, and that was in the Gulf Islands. But that was a long time ago and the orcs have greatly increased in numbers since Sauron reoccupied Barad-Dur.

I've stayed in many provincial parks -- mostly without reservations, and I don't recall what I did when I had reservations, if I ever did have any.  It should be a simple matter to Google the name of the park you're interested in and getting reservations info that way.

I stayed in some canadian parks last summer....just google them by name and if you want reservations at that park there should be a reservation tab on that website.

We have also stayed in provincial parks without reservations, but it was at the end of the season, and the parks were very lightly populated when we did it.

So, here's the long story regarding specifically PROVINCIAL parks (as opposed to B.C. Rec Sites and Forest Service Sites):

There are TWO websites you need to deal with: One is the list of British Columbia Parks (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/); the other is the reservations website (https://discovercamping.ca)

One thing you need to know is that, while these are considered 'provincial parks', they sub-contract management duties to individual companies. Usually these companies collect payment directly, have specific contact numbers, etc.

The other thing to note is that many or most campgrounds offer both reservable AND FCFS (First Come First Serve) sites. The nice thing about the FCFS, is that there is a button on each campgrounds webpage on the DiscoverCamping.ca website that says "1st FCFS Expected Availability" in which they do their best to forecast the likelihood of availability at any given time.

So, what I would do is look at the BC Parks website to get detailed information on the parks, their amenities, etc. and use the reservation site for reservations, and to determine availability.

In my experience, the further you are from Vancouver, the more likely you're going to find some sort of availability.

Oh, one last thing, I am not positive, but I believe you cannot make reservations further than 90 days ahead. But you can confirm that yourself and report back to us.
