Satellite radio is about the cost ($11 to $21/mo) of those streaming music services and it works almost anywhere, no cellular connection needed. They also have streaming service if you prefer that. 

Lots of music, talk shows, sports, weather, news, and entertainment to choose from.

I bought a lifetime subscription more than 10 years ago...so I'm a bit biased!

We're using a Winegard Pathway X2 dish on Wally receivers, one in the Pod and another in our larger TT.  The combination work great on the Dish system.  Great HD service.  One caution and it will be the same for all satellite antennas is that they need a clear path, leaves or other obstructions really cut down on the signal strength.

I'll pass on the cable news though, I find that regardless of any unmentionable political bias you can acquire that info much more efficiently reading it online. 

I'll add free Spotify to the list for music consumption. If I was offline enough I'd pay the $10/month and get Spotify premium with Hulu and download my playlists. But I'm not camping enough to warrant it and I have a lot of music and video on my portable hard disk for those few times. I have a wifi one so it will stream to tablets and phones in and around the campsite as needed.  I play it on the TV and stereo via my mobile phone as well.

I'm a cord cutter at home too (been about a decade now; saved so much money and I no longer channel surf). For travelling both Netflix and Amazon Prime now let you download lots of movies and TV series when you have wifi to play on a tablet, phone, or laptop when you don't.  If you have cell service TuneIn Radio App will let you listen to cable news --in deference to our no politics/religion rule, which I greatly appreciate, I'll refrain from naming what I listen to but I bet they're all there. Streaming audio isn't as hard on your data plan.

I have unlimited mobile data and Netflix and Amazon Prime shipping accounts anyway so there is no additional cost involved other than buying the phone HDMI adapter ($20) and a cell signal booster and directional antenna ($200), which does a good job most places I camp in bringing in a strong cell signal. 

In the Appalachians I sometimes camp down in a hollow and run into the same problem you have in the West (no signal to boost) and then I also trot out my movie collection which I bring along for a rainy day.

Regarding cell service, I agree with Glue Guy, out west our cell service is spotty even in more urbanized areas due to mountains blocking signals.  And when you get into less populated areas, even if they're flat there is often no cell service.  

For us, we have no cable or streaming service, such as Netflix, at home, much less in our Pod.  We manage with what we can get off the regular internet or do without.  While traveling in our Pod, we use the cell phones for internet connections using the hotspot feature.  When we have no signal, we just enjoy the simplicity of being cut off from the world and engage in those novel activities of reading and conversation, enjoying the peace and quiet around us.

The mobile phone only works if one is in an area which has good cell service or a workable WiFi service. I've been at some RV parks which specifically state that WiFi is not to be used for streaming video. Unless one has an unlimited data plan with good cell service, that is not a viable option either. I've also been in areas where the cell service was either non-existent or marginal, neither of which allow for streaming. Satellite is expensive. Having a laptop with movies ripped from DVDs or a DVD/Blueray player is a less expensive way to go but does ot allow for live news or current shows. Most of the time, our TV stays off anyway. That is the absolutely least expensive option. Big smile

I would argue that there are still huge areas with no cell service. Heck, we barely get cell service at all where we live. Many, if not most of the places we like to camp do not get cell service. 

We are also cord cutters, but we get most of our TV service over the air (DTV). No cable; no DSL where we live, so I guess you could say there was no cord to cut.

As a long term cord cutter, might I suggest using a mobile phone with a data plan instead? Most (not all) locations have mobile data service these days. Connect your phone to your TV with an HDMI adapter and cable. Leave that big expensive dish at home. Get a Netflix, HULU, or Amazon Prime streaming account and watch away. Or just watch stuff on YouTube for free.Thumbs Up. You might like it so much you drop your sat service entirely. I did, over 10 years ago, and I've never looked back.

Winegard now has a portable antenna that receives both Dish and DirectTV.  The unit is prceyand only receives SD signal for DirectTV.  I heard that DirectTV has been moving to all HD and hopes to complete this by the end of the year. I haven't seen any documented evidence of this.  But it would be wise to check into it before laying out $500 or so for a Winegard antenna.
