G'Afternoon all,

I'm still messing with strategies for my traveling companion's CPAP.

We're taking the pod in tomorrow to have bearings repacked, brakes and tires checked and were going to have a DC socket installed because we have a power cord for the CPAP that plugs into the device on one end and a CPAP battery on the other with a DC socket.  (Before you ask the external CPAP battery won't last long enough to be more than a backup option).  The CPAP battery does work but the DC plug won't run the CPAP in either of our cars.

Any thought on why this would be? Is it because this particular CPAP might need an inverter and the battery supplies one?  If it won't work in the car it won't work with a DC outlet installed in the camper either, will it?

While we're at it, is there anything else we should have looked at while we're at the RV shop?  This will be our first visit there and while the 2016 pod is in great shape we don't know what's ever been done (we have been maintaining the batteries).

I'll appreciate your opinions.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head (forgive me if I'm stating the obvious) is did you have the car ignition on when you tested the cpap? If you share the brand and model cpap we could look it up and see if the that might tell us anything.

If you don't have any leak problems and all your appliances and fixtures work as they should (check both gas end electric operation before you go in) then I can't think of anything else you might want to have the RV place check for you.

If the DC plug is for the cigarette lighter outlet (I know I'm old school) then is the fuse blown inside the connector plug? The tip of the plug should unscrew and there would be a glass inline fuse inside.

Echo, another possible problem is if you had the motor running, you could have created enough line noise for your CPAP that it wouldn't run.  I saw this happen to one where I fixed the reversed polarity of the plug and it ran fine, but when my friend tried to run it with the generator to his RV going, the CPAP refused to run until he turned off the generator.  .... and returned us camping near him to blissful peace and quiet.  Clap

Was the DC cord designed for the CPAP? If not, it may have the wrong polarity in the connector, which I assume is a typical DC barrel connector. Another possibility with an aftermarket cord is that the CPAP runs on 24V and the straight DC cord isn't providing enough voltage, i.e. it needs a voltage step-up circuit.

It would help if you mention the brand and model of the CPAP machine. Mine is a Respironics System One. I purchased the 12V power cord made for this model. It was much more expensive than a generic 12V cord but it works fine plugged into the 12V outlets I installed. One way to make sure you know the power requirements of your CPAP machine is to look at the transformer block. Look at the output voltage. Is it 12V or 24V?

Thanks Stephen, Its a Resmed Airsense 10 but I don't have (or have access to the other information).  I've read that some need inverters and others either already have them or don't need them.  I suspect this is the problem and I think what we'll try next.  :)

I think its not a fuse because it can work on the cpap battery but not on either car. We also have this weird cord that has a 12 volt socket on one end and little clips like jumper cables on the other.  I think that can connect directly to one of the camper batteries but we'd have to slam the door on the cord.

how fun is all this?LOL

Okay, I did a real quick web search. Your Resmed Airsense 10 runs on 24V. https://www.resmed.com/uk/en/consumer/products/accessories/air-10-dc-dc-converter.html

You would need to get a 12V to 24V converter. You could check Amazon for this item.
