Topic: Door Handle/ Stair Rail question/observation? Posted: 09 Feb 2019 at 8:34am |
I had no problem installing the port hole on my door. I had no extra room on the flange, but it all worked out just fine and I've had no leaks or other problems other than very slightly compressing the Styrofoam when I tightened down the through bolts that hold the port hole and ring on place.
Who ever wrote that declaration may not have actually installed one or got one with a flange that was 1 1/4". When I return from Colombia, I will look up the one I purchased on Amazon and will post the link for that particular porthole. Motor7, since you are relatively new to the board, you may not have noticed that sometimes people post statements in the absolute when they don't really know all the facts and variables.

Looking at the 10" round ABS one's...still can';t find a mfg spec on the thickness. I did find this in one of the reviews:
"YOU CANNOT USE THIS ON A WALL THICKER THAN 1 3/8"!!! PERIOD...."
So it looks like these are out for our purposes.

If you suspect the presence of zombies why would you want to open the door? Better to be sure its clear and then sneak out the emergency exit in that case.

Why would would you want to go outside during a Zombie attack? And if you succeeded in opening the door blocked by the handrail they'd spill into your Pod and you'd have to invite them to dinner. It'd be awfully crowded in that case and hard to cook.
Take a look on Amazon, they may have the thickness in their product data. And, if you order from them, you can return it if it doesn't fit and get a refund.

I got it now, what threw me off is that on the 'preview' it would say that ebay refused to connect'. After closing that window the link now works for me.
Anyway, those ABS/plastic portholes are all over ebay and not a single one lists the thickness. They are cheap enough that I am just going to order one and see if it will fit.
Here is another problem, if you have a window or porthole, and you reach out to move the grab bar won't the Zombies be able to grab or bite you?

More people need to decorate the outside of their Pods with zany and irreverent ideas. Wings, fins, periscopes, painting as a yellow submarine or fish scales, all come to mind. Once I get all our house projects finished, instead of leaving my idle hands in the devil's workshop, I'm going to consult with an artist friend of mine and start making some utterly non-functional modifications to the outside. Right now our Pod is a blanks slate of pure white with no decals, so it's like a blank painter's canvas.

Besides the porthole, there are also a number of rectangular windows that can be installed in the door, or adjacent to the door if your pod will accommodate it.

Well I'm glad I got you guys to thinking. I like the boat port hole Idea. It makes our Pods more Escape Pod-ish... Kinda fits the purpose of the Pod to escape work and day to day life...

Motor7, Nope, that's not the one, but it is very similar. I got it from Amazon. The thing that you have to be careful about is that the porthole flange is deep enough to penetrate the thickness of the door.
I checked and the one I got doesn't seem to be there any more. They do have the brand in your link info.
To check the thickness of the door, you can remove the latch on the inside and measure through the hole from one side to the other. I'm in Colombia right now so I don't have access to the cut out I had left over, but as I recall it was about 1 1/2"
If you install the port hole assembly, be sure to measure how far you need to reach to release the handrail. I didn't, because it never occurred to me that being trapped inside would be an issue, but by dumb luck, I put it where I can reach it.
By the way the little world thingy at the top of where you write, next to the spell check turns your pasted link into an active one. But, sometimes the window doesn't open all the way and you have to drag down to the bottom of the window to find the soft key to click. As for the link reducer, I don't have a clue.
