Let's be careful about exercising our "freedom" on our free forum. Perhaps it is just me but, I'm noticing more religious and, to a lesser degree, political statements expressed. We all know that we don't do that here. We remain neutral in such matters in that we just don't speak to them here. To allow them would guarantee that the forum would devolve into a cesspool of bickering, insults, etc. - a place nobody would care to visit. The absence of these divisive topics has been key to the longevity of the forum. We can all coexist when we avoid that which would certainly divide us.

Being so fundamental to our success lends high priority to "policing" this sort of thing. If we can't "police" ourselves then, the caretakers are forced to step in and take corrective measures. It would be unfortunate if the caretakers had to start singling out members - to have their posts approved, prior to being displayed in the forum. We know what the rules are - both in letter and spirit. Do the right thing.

Want to express your faith? Wonderful but, do it elsewhere.
Republican or Democrat? Wonderful but, do it elsewhere.

Again, just do the right thing.

Me three. I just think it's funny the lack of personal responsibility. The "devil made me do it" mentality. Like why did you kill the whole family - the babysitter was mean to me, that's the problem babysitters.

Does this mean the word God or our creator or  perhaps the word church can not be used. I just want to understand so I am not breaking any rules. I don't fully understand, if you could clarify what you mean as far as religion that would help. Thank you

The rules specifically cite discussion. If you were to post a message deliberately aimed at your personal beliefs, that may be an issue. However a message such as God Bless is not a discussion.

It's always tricky discussing the behavior of humans, their motivations and reasoning, and cognitive dissonance with out treading into areas of religion, philosophy, politics, economics, and other factors that motivate our behavior.

Freedom of speech is extremely important.

Excessive political correctness is the death of much in life that is enjoyable, like comedy and free discussion. I think you are too sensitive about this subject. Like pornography ("I don't know what it is, but I know it when I see it"), excessive mention of religion or politics or guns is hard to define but clear when seen.

I agree that excess mention of politics or religion or guns must be controlled in this forum, I just haven't seen it here.

Relax.

+1 to lostagain.

The topic was human behavior. That is by definition determined by culture, religion, politics, core values, social norms, etc. It's impossible to discuss human behavior in the absence of those topics, and perspectives in these areas differ among the folks on this forum, just as they do in society as a whole. So automatically we are on shaky ground.

Happy, I agree with you that freedom of speech is important but we also have to keep in mind that there is a difference in freedom of speech in a private setting as opposed to a governmental entity trying to limit speech.  Here we have a private forum and though such freedom is important, it is also important to keep in mind that if political/religious/gun discussions get started here they can spin out of control at the speed of light, or at least the movement of electrons in the internet, and turn into a bitter battle.  This has happened in the past.  So freedom of speech in a private context is a very different concept that it would be if you wanted to publish a news paper.

Excessive political correctness [which includes excessive religious correctness] is also tricky situation.  Different folks have different levels of sensitivity.  Though in an ideal world, we should all have thick skins and not let someone else's comment get to us, it happens and big arguments start.  Thus, in an effort to avoid these unnecessary conflicts and continue sharing valuable information, it is best to err on the side of being a little too good mannered rather than overly blunt.

The problem that we all face is when does something become "excessive" in regard to the topics to be avoided.  That's an impossible question to answer as each person has his/her own level of tolerance.  Again, maybe the best course of action is to err on the side of caution and to try to be as factual as one may be under the circumstances.

On this board, and I've moderated other boards, we have a very good balance.  Let's keep it that way.

I agree with one of the previous posters -

The basic problem here is that none of us know what we are talking about.

Our hard working and sincere moderator would do us all a favor by giving us specific examples of what worries him so much.
