Topic: Storage Question Posted: 16 Oct 2018 at 9:07am |
Is there a recommendation for or against storing an Rpod on jackstands to relieve the axle tension and tires for the winter? I have been doing it some winters and some not. I jack up the frame and place stands on the frame near the axle so the tires are just slightly off the ground. Pod is stored inside a barn. Thoughts?

I park our Pod all the time with the stabilizers extended and jack stands in the front, all of which carry some of the weight. I didn't do it to preserve the axle, but because I like to putter around in the trailer breaking, then fixing stuff and don't like it when it's bouncy and tippy from moving my excessive mass around inside. I suppose taking a little weight off the tires may reduce the tendency to have cold flat spots but really never paid attention to it. The frame certainly isn't going to deteriorate over the life of the trailer (absent significant rust) so you aren't going to weaken it.
Of course everyone, has his/her own recommended method of storage and will vigorously assert that her/his method is the best, as opposed to all others, but in the long run, do what makes you happy, You are not likely to hurt the trailer.

Texman,
I store a couple classic cars I own as well as the Pod in my building. I don't lift them off the tires if the storage is only for one winter. I learned a lesson from long term storage and tire issues when I stored a car for 8 years once, on it's tires. I do extend the stabilizers because I use the storage time for maintenance projects, I like the project to be stable. With vehicles the areas I have had issues with long term storage are, in no order: tires, shocks and brakes. I'm originally from Dumas, so somewhat familiar with your weather. I think you are ok for a single season, then use and then storage again. BTW - Mice have been a major issue a number of times.

I have a car collection and park the pod indoors next to them as well over the 5 months or so winters. Look on the side walls and inflate the tires to the suggested max pressure then lower in spring before driving or towing. I've had "O" issues with flat spotting over that short period of time.

+2 We do the same as we store our pod inside our abandoned horse barn, on dirt. No tire issues ever.

Just inflate to MAX pressure and then park... Maybe some flat spots for a mile or so, but then all good...
