If memory serves, in Indiana anything over 1K needs it's own (working) brake system (electric or hydraulic or surge).

You definitely need a brake controller. Most states require a trailer brake for any trailer over ~~ 3000 lbs. The exact requirement differs slightly from state to state, but the 3000 lb rule is fairly universal.

Definitely want a brake controller for the pod. Here in Vermont, if the trailer has electric brake you have to use them.

Our local U-haul dealer just quoted me $245 for a reliance brake controller, wiring and installation.

Most states require that if a trailer has brakes, they must be functional. I can't for a moment think why you wouldn't want working brakes..

Another alternative to the Tekonsha P3 is the Hopkins InSIGHT Flex-Mount proportional brake controller. It is the one I have and I have been very pleased with it.
