I was just looking at the new Ranger of Ford's website, I am really liking what I am seeing but the only engine is a 2.3 Ecoboost with a 10 speed. Not much out there yet for specs, any thoughts on how this little 4 banger would pull a pod?

I pulled with a 2L Ecoboost Escape for a while. The Ecoboost engines have a lot of torque for the size. The cost is running premium to get that power. Take that into consideration as you look. An Ecoboost V6 would be better.

If they offered it with the Ecoboost V6 I would be pre ordering one! My understanding is that it will not be an option, the V6 won't fit in the engine bay. A diesel engine may someday be available though.

A 2.3L EcoBoost will pull like a normally aspirated 4.6L engine. So it will probably have more horsepower and torque than the similar 4L V6 Tacoma. Do not let the number of cylinders fool you. EcoBoost engines are built like diesel engines, so they are very stout.

I would hazard a guess that it will have in the neighborhood of 260HP and 300 ft-lbs of torque. I don't know this, but I'm extrapolating based on other EcoBoost engines.

Dar's car has a 1.5 liter Ecoboost four cyl, and it makes 177 HP.  For a small engine it is amazing.  I think with a ten speed transmission it will pull well.

I looked it up. Both my HP guess and my torque guess were low. The 2.3L EcoBoost has been in production for 3 years and is used in a number of vehicles now.

From Wikipedia:

The 2.3L version of the EcoBoost engine debuted in the 2015 Lincoln MKC crossover. Based upon the 2.0L EcoBoost, the 2.3 L engine produces 289 PS (213 kW; 285 hp) @ 5500 rpm, 305 lb⋅ft (414 N⋅m) @ 2750 rpm. This engine is also available in the Ford Mustang EcoBoost, with power figures of 310 hp (231 kW; 314 PS) @ 5500 rpm, 320 lb⋅ft (434 N⋅m) @ 3000 rpm.

The 2.3 L EcoBoost engine is produced with the 2.0 L EcoBoost at the Valencia Engine Plant in Valencia, Spain. In March 2015 Ford announced the official production start of the all-new twin-scroll 2.0-liter and 2.3-liter EcoBoost engines for North America at its Cleveland Engine Plant in Ohio. [47]

In other countries it is becoming much more common for small pickups to have diesel engines, including Rangers.  The problem with them is they're pretty dirty.  The eco-boost engine is a pretty good idea except for the expensive gas.  I think I'll just plug along in my old Dodge Dakota until it dies.  Hopefully, that will be at a point where I probably shouldn't be driving anyway.

“The current lay of the land places the Chevrolet Colorado at about 7,000lbs, The Colorado Diesel and Canyon Diesel at about 7,700lbs, Toyota Tacoma at around 6,800 lbs, and Nissan Frontier at about 6,700lbs. 

That means that the Towing Capacity of the 2019 Ford Ranger is more than 7,700lbs.”

Looking very attractive if true.

Some places (noteably England) are re-thinking their wholesale embrace of diesel. They are discovering that "cleaning up diesel" is almost as hard as "cleaning up coal".

And around here, diesel costs a lot more than gasoline. Not quite enough to offset the generally better MPG, but it's a close call.

I think in another decade, the use of diesel will be on a steep decline.

It will be interesting to see what the torque and towing specs are when they are released. I am sure they see the Colorado as their main competition and if the Ranger will indeed pull 7,700# it would certainly do a nice job of tugging a pod. I like the Ecoboost since DW wants to do some high altitude towing, and I had a bad experience towing our bunkhouse trailer through the Grand Tetons with our Dodge Hemi. It suffered a nasty case of altitude sickness.
