Just a shout out and prayer for our members and friends affected by the CA fires. I live in a tornado area and just thinking about fire really bothers me, at least with tornados there is usually something to recover. Fires leave nothing. I read today that there could be 10,000 structures in jeopardy. Terrible. My thoughts are with you.

The fires are creating their own "weather". I've watched footage of what they are calling "firenados". Very sobering.

GlueGuy,

How far are you from the fire areas, are you in a safe area? I lived in CA for awhile but not in the north.

Quite far away. Biggest fires are the Carr fire (> 200 miles) & Ferguson fire (~~ 200 miles). Closest fires are the two burning near Clear Lake (~~ 120 miles).

California is a pretty big state. Huge rural areas.

Yeah many people don't know how big Cali is.. Only AK and TX are bigger. My parents are north of Sacto.. But thankfully, away from the fires. To put it in perspective,, the 20 million people in Los Angeles are over 600 miles away from the Carr fire.. and it's like 100 miles farther to the Oregon border. And more then 100 miles to the Mexico border going the other way..

GlueGuy, Thanks, glad you're safe. I realize how big CA is was stationed there for several tours and worked for Hughes Aircraft, all in the south. From TX so I know a bit about big. Those fires are darn scary.

I always like to point out to Texans that if they divided Alaska in two, Texas would be the third largest state.   Wink

Funny, when I was stationed in Alaska they never failed to remind me of that:) Alaska is a great state.

I had the experience of living through the Oakland CA hills fire in 1991.  Over 3200 dwellings were destroyed.  The fire, like the Carr fire, created a its own weather and firestorm.  It was so hot it dehydrated concrete and turned foundations of homes to powder.  These wild fires are immensely destructive and it takes generations to recover because the dirt is burned leaving no organic material in the soil to support vegetation.

Sadly, the western states are going to be experiencing more and more such fires as global warming continues and long term drought becomes firmly established.  Even in my lifetime, I've seen tremendous changes in the Sierra snow pack and the disappearance of glaciers that used to be well south of Mt. Whitney; Palisades glacier for one, has all but disappeared.  As the fires burn up existing forests, insufficient precipitation ensures that what eventually will come back will be vegetation much more like the far south end of California, with explosive manzanita brush and such.  Camping in the west is significantly changing.

Back from Colombia only to find that the entire state of Nevada is covered in smoke from the fires in CA.  The drive up US395 was not exactly pleasant with 106 temps and dense smoke all the way.  Now they're saying that the Mendocino Complex fire may not be fully contained until September.

Had planned on some camping this August, but the air is so unhealthful that it's better to stay inside.  I think I'll go back to Cartagena for a bit longer.  it's hot there but it's been raining, so no fires.
