ledge storage space above bench seats

   Hello.
We have a 171. At the very front, there is a narrow ledge running above the two bench seats. Has anyone modified this area for greater storage space?

I am thinking that even a low wire 'picket fence' would enable me to put DVDs or books on the ledge without them falling out. In the pic the wood supports look pretty thin, but do-able.
