My folks have a cabin in Blue Lakes Springs, in Arnold. It's a really nice area up there. I love to kayak on Utica Res and Lake Alpine.
Ebbetts is very steep. I lost my brakes on the backside of that pass once in an '89 F-350 4x4 crew cab with a 10ft Alaskan cabover. It was dicey getting down the mountain. Had to use low range four wheel drive.

I live in Avery (on Highway 4 between Murphys and Arnold). I have spent a lot of years going over Ebbetts Pass both directions on a motorcycle. I know the road really well and have had numerous close calls with inconsiderate people pulling trailers where they should not be.
I would say the western slope before Ebbetts is very doable by a skilled and courteous driver towing an RPOD, but from there on down the East side, not so much.
Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should. You will be a hazard to other motorists.

Yes, the descent is a first gear keep it very slow process. There are a lot of bicycles and motorcycles on the road, in addition to people testing the cornering ability of their sports cars. When we left Silver Springs campground to go home, we saw multiple emergency vehicles passing in the opposite direction toward the pass. Don't know any details, but it was obviously an injury accident. The really steep part of the pass, ascending/descending onto the Nevada side is relatively short, but is basically a wide one lane road, and it becomes considerably less steep from the campground to the east.
My problem is that my wife doesn't like roads with cliffs on the side, this it's going to take some real convincing to get her to go along with crossing the pass. Her solution: Let's go to Hope Valley instead.

I recommend having good reliable brakes!!!! Ebbetts Pass is the steepest pass in the Sierras.

Ebbets pass is a very popular route for bicycle races. The camping on both sides of the pass is spectacular. One place especially nice is Pacific Valley Campground, along Pacific Creek. The Forrest service says it’s not recommended for trailers but is easy to go there with a Pod.

My parents have a cabin in Arnold, on HWY 4. Ebbett's Pass is the steepest pass in CA. I lost my brakes on the NV side in my old '89 F-350 4x4 with a 10ft' Alaskan cabover. Stopped at the top of the pass to take a photo and when I got back into the truck the brake pedal went to the floor! NOT a good feeling!!! I put it into low range and we creeped down the mountain. (The plastic parts in the brake calipers stuck and caused the brakes to heat up and the brake fluid boiled. [Plastic parts] must have been one of Ford's 'Better Ideas'.) NOT!!!
It's a pretty place to be. We've kayaked a LOT at Lake Alpine, and also Utica Reservoir.

It also has less wind turbulence without the loops.

Just back from a nice long weekend with our Pod. Silver Creek campground is on CA route 4 just east of Ebbetts pass at about 7,500 ft. Nice campground. Lots of really great spots on the other side of the pass too, but they tend to get a little crowded on the weekends because they are closer to Sacramento CA.
Our pod is no longer loopy; just a little white cloud.
