Tell your Border Patrol friend THANKS for the scoop! It confirms what I was thinking. In Indiana, since I was renewing, I COULD have gotten an "old style" (non-compliant) license, if desired this time. However, anything NEW must be the Real ID. However, it wasn't that big of a deal and next time, maybe I can go back to renewing online.

Now, I really need to quit procrastinating and get a passport card. It's overdue for me to drive North and visit our good friends/neighbors/allies in Canada.

Small RVs will have some noticeable movements. My friend was dealing with the fifth wheel transportation as he has to transport his Redwood fifth wheel and he was lucky enough to get the best fifth wheel transportation company and got his vehicle shipped, by taking the benefits of their extra resources and services at the right time.

As Canadians who travel to the US a lot as our daughter and her family live in North Carolina, we really never have an issue with either boarder service, however, we only travel on our passports.  US customs will not accept anything else from us.  The passport really makes the crossing painless and is easier than a wallet card as you don’t have to fish out your wallet to get it.
I really think you need to look at this from point of view of the person interviewing you for access to their country, the easier you make it the less chance of a negative reaction.
We love our country and it’s uniqueness which sets us apart from our southern neighbors, we like visitors and only ask that you respect that uniqueness.
Cheers

Will be crossing the border in early June and will be staying in Banff NP for 6 nights.  I found the info here useful and can't wait for our trip.  This will be the longest trip we have ever taken with our RP.  Thanks for all the ideas and info.

We all have passports. Sounds like the easiest way to go.

Another question. Firearms. More specifically a hard gun? Problem? Procedure?

There are no provisions that allow you to carry a handgun thru the boarder or in Canada.
For a fee and a permit you can bring a rifle or shotgun for hunting trips.

I usually carry one in my camper just in case. I never hope to have to shoot it except at the firing range. Thanks.

Guns are a very emotional issue in the US, in Canada we have guns but much stricter rules, I would think visiting Canada you would respect our laws just as we are expected to adhere to yours.

That's the correct thing to do. Many years ago I flew a private plane to Alaska, which required a handgun to be carried on the aircraft, but (as stated above) it was not allowed in Canada.

So I shipped a handgun to Northway AK, where I re-entered the US. That way I could be legal both places.
