Topic: Anti sway Posted: 14 Apr 2018 at 6:52am |
I'm researching anti-sway bars. When crossing through an area on the ay home I go through an area that has cross wind. Being it was pretty light, I was surprised by the sway I felt.
Looks like I'm adding one.
Here's where I'm getting confused, so please talk to me and help clear up what I think I'm reading.
It seems that anti-sway alone is the dis-connect type when backing up. What really sounded strange is all I've looked at so far also say to dis-connect if driving in 'slippery' conditions (seems that's when you'd what it most..).
I know I was towing empty, but that really shouldn't have made a big difference (I think..)
Thoughts??

They say to remove the sway bars when in slippery conditions, ie snow and ice, because the whole point of them is to keep the tow and towed, more or less a congruous unit. In slippery conditions, this means a little slip in the trailer is going to try to push the tow vehicle sideways without being able to pivot around the hitch or steering wheels. good thing when all tires have equal traction, not so good when they don't. That said.. very few owners tow in the conditions where it's a worry.

+1 - I don't tow in "slippery" (ie snow and ice)conditions. I have help, my driveway is so steep I can't get up or down it in snow and ice.

The idea of an anti-sway device is nice, except that you have to account for backing up and the slippery conditions mentioned here.
I still like the WDH with a built-in anti-sway capability. All of the WDH/anti-sway products that I know of don't require special consideration for backing up. Plus it gives you more steering control (transferring weight to the front wheels).
If the conditions are "slippery", maybe it's not a good idea to be towing. Park it, and wait for some better weather.

Thanks Guys!
Dip on the truck was a little deeper than I was expecting. So going WDH with anti-sway may just be what I do.
From what I've been reading, those that have gone that route are saying they're very happy with the choice.
I also see a couple of you have gone with the Fastway E2. The link posted is the trunnion style (vs round?). Have no clue yet what either really means..

The way I understand it, the trunnion is for when you don't have a lot of ground clearance.
I have the Fastway E2 w/round bars and think it's a great WDH/antisway system. Found mine on Amazon for around 250.

+1 to what zubrew says. We happen to have the round bar, and it works fine, but does hang down a few inches. The trunnion will provide a little more clearance.

I know I'm in minority, but sticking with my sway bar, has worked fine for years. I don't back up much without getting out and seeing what is behind me and it takes no time to pull pin on sway bar and reconnect. I don't have anything against WDHs, just not a need for me.
