Has anyone ever removed the couch area to the floor and replaced that space with two recliner chairs?

The subject has come up before and I think the issue is getting recliners through the door.

I did see a 178, the owner removed the dinette and put 2 RV recliners in. The size of the recliner makes a difference, but there is products that will fit. What is under the seating in a 179? In a 178, the area under the dinette is storage with the exception of an outlet that can be relocated. The issue maybe the recliner can't sit on something, the area where you want it has to be clear.

You could remove the queen bed and put recliners there. You can't remove the dinette and put recliners there because the floor under the cushion of the dinette is the base of the slide-out. Since the slide-out has to clear the tire and fender, it is impossible to modify the base to enable installation of recliners.

That is not to say that you can't do anything. You could remove the ottomans. Removing the ottoman closest to the bed is the easiest. It is only held in place with some screws. Removing the ottoman closest to the refrigerator is not so easy. Inside of it is wiring that can't be removed. The best that could be done is to try to compact it as much as possible and build a low cover for it as some have done. Others have modified the dinette area to make it into a nicer sofa with a slide-out or flip-out base that makes a better bed than the cushions that come with the 179. One person even built a storage area which makes a new sofa back that is a storage area. He uses it for wine bottles. You may need to check the Facebook group for ideas as well.

We are gon\ing to do that in our Passport Elite.  We started researching it.  The couch is in the slideout.  It will have to be taken apart and perhaps cut up to take out the door.  The recliners will NOT be made for RVs they are too expensive.  There are a bunch sold on Amazon between $100 and $150.  We are looking at the ones that are 1. Fake leather but look good.  2. Come in two pieces so will fit through door. 3. Very narrow width (some reviews claim not for anyone over 5'8"). 4 And most important we want the footrest to go up independent of the back, so that we can rest our feet while still sitting up waching TV.  Most cheap recliners do not do that.  We do not plan on bolting it to the floor but will use belts to anchor them when traveling (just like the TV has)

I agree with StephenH.
I have seen a mod where the ottomans and table were removed and office chairs on rollers were used, but that space got pretty cramped for two people, the bed, kitchen, and wet bath too.Cry

We just got a 2017 r-pod 179 and so enjoyed reading about some of the mods you’ve done to your camper. We are considering our first mod: removing the ottoman closest to the bed. Will this in any way mess up the slide out weight distribution while slide is in and traveling down rough roads

I am not aware of any problem with removing that one. We did not in our 179, but pulled both in the 195. Goes without saying, but I will anyway, the rpods need to be treated fairly gently on the rough back roads. The black and grey water valves hang fairly close to the ground when crossing washes and creek beds or uneven terrain. Have seen many rpods "out there" but they're not as solid as most tow vehicles. Throw in extra screws, tape and zip ties. Have fun!

We don’t plan on going off roading; Arkansas highways are just very rough,Cry  after looking at several posts, we are also wanting to replace the very uncomfortable dinette bench with a futon, as was mentioned in another post.
