The dome and a Louisville  slugger! Black flies start in late April or beginning of May and the mosquitoes start right around the 4th of July

You know you're in trouble when you overhear one mosquito saying "We gonna eat him here, or take him to go?"

One great thing about winter in the north, NO mosquitoes, NO black flies, NO stable flies, NO deer flies.  You can just go out in the snow and enjoy nature w/o bugs swarming around your face.  How sweet it is, enjoying nature with 2 feet of snow on the ground, a balmy 6 degrees above zero, and moderate winds blowing in your face, REFRESHING !

How do you do smelt up there? When we lived in Minnesota, we would use a net in a frame. Lay it on the lake bottom, and wait for a school to pass. When they did, we would lift the net/frame, and gather a half-buck of smelt.

Love beer-battered smelt!

You are lucky!!! We are not allowed to net them here. We use jig poles with up to 2 hooks on them. So you can basically get two at a time. Can usually get half of a 5 gallon bucket in 2-3 hrs. We will also cook some up for lunch in the shanty while fishing.
Me too!! nothing live beer battered smelt!!!

Artic front coming thru TN starting today, next few days will be bitter for us. Already fixed one pipe freeze now challenge is to keep house working, the building codes don't support freezes like in North, Pod is safe. Leo - No fishing here:) I'm like Ralphie's little brother I have all my clothes on and can't move. Long week for us:)

At least where we are we can stay warm under the snow(snow caves, snow tunnels), got another 12 inches last night, more came today but haven't measured it yet.  Am glad to say we don't have the snow amount that Erie, Pennsylvania has, at least not yet.
