I have been looking for a wrench to drain the hot water heater in my camper. Is there a standard one or do I buy a socket and extension? The auto parts store had what I needed but it was almost $100. I only want to drain the water out before winter. It seems campers ought to come with essential items. Any help is appreciated. TY!!

I think it is a 1-1/16 inch socket.  I had to buy a socket, but I had the handle and extension.  Cost a couple dollars.

Go to Harbor Freight and get a 1 1/16 th socket.  You will need a 3 or 4" extension.  Be sure to release the pressure vent before taking the plug out.  If you only use it on the water heater, it will last forever.

Opening a hot water tap (kitchen or bathroom) will take the pressure off in the water heater also.

When we were at the FROG ralley in Kingston this summer one of the guest speakers was an RV Repair business owner.  He was death on doing anything with that pressure relief valve unless it was an emergency.  Causes problems with the valve apparently.....so after that I just open the taps like Keith-n-Dar mentioned.  Does the same thing.  Don't for get to wrap the threads with plumbers tape befor you put the anode rod back in the HW tank.

I take mine out with a large crescent wrench and a pair of vise grips.  Attach the crescent wrench vertically to the bolt and the vise grip perpindicular to the end of the crescent wrench. I learned this method from this forum several years ago and it has worked for me since.
Happy trails...
