Plus it threw the socket wrench about 10 ft and broke the anode.

I also learned about pressure the hard way a few months ago....removed the anode rod and pow....a huge splash of cool water with white scale blasted me!  No damage to the body...just scared the heck out of me.  Lesson learned, for sure!

That is what I said the first time.  After the second time it seemed to sink in and I haven't done it again.  Why is it when one does something stupid there is always someone there to see it...

+1 remembering to relieve the pressure.

Yesterday I had been drawing water from the freshwater tank into the kitchen sink then walked away to take care of an unrelated task.

When I came back I pulled the HW tank anode and got 6 gallons of ice cold water in the chest like a fire hose that knocked me on my backsides.

Thankfully nothing hurt but my pride but I won't forget that again.

I take mine out with a large crescent wrench and a pair of vise grips.  Attach the crescent wrench vertically to the bolt and the vise grip perpindicular to the end of the crescent wrench. I learned this method from this forum several years ago and it has worked for me since.
Happy trails...

When we were at the FROG ralley in Kingston this summer one of the guest speakers was an RV Repair business owner.  He was death on doing anything with that pressure relief valve unless it was an emergency.  Causes problems with the valve apparently.....so after that I just open the taps like Keith-n-Dar mentioned.  Does the same thing.  Don't for get to wrap the threads with plumbers tape befor you put the anode rod back in the HW tank.

Opening a hot water tap (kitchen or bathroom) will take the pressure off in the water heater also.
