The check valve is built into the front of the pump. It's literally a little rubber disc/flap.

If the pump is cycling repeatedly after you have closed the tap, you have a leak somewhere.

The system should, and will, hold pressure for months. I have opened the system on Pods I knew had been sitting for weeks to months, and got sprayed by water under pressure when I forgot to open a valve first, before opening the plumbing lines.

Our POD had been sitting for 3 months and I decided to drain the hot water tank.  Guess we have a pretty tight water system  - the pump hasn't been on in that 3 mo period - and it blew the anode and and my socket wrench about 10 feet and drenched me from the waist down.

LOL.. Most owners only open the system one time without releasing any pressure.. Remember, right there on the WH is a pressure relief valve.. I always pull it first.. now.

I did the same thing the first time I winterized the pod.  And the second time.
