We will be traveling across the southern part of New York to Chicago then up through Michigan to Ontario and back down to New York in the latter half of October, after the state and provincial campgrounds are closed.

Any recommendations?  Thanks!

Bucky Dutchman - Where are you planning on entering Ontario?  Sault Ste Marie, Port Huron or Detroit?  A quick check shows most Michigan State Parks are open in October.

Thanks for the reply jimandclare! We'll be entering at SSM.

I checked the provincial parks, and they seem to close when our Northeast/New England state parks do: mid-October.

Great!  That gives you an opportunity to sample anywhere in the whole state.  Here is a link to the Michigan State Park Reservation System:

https://www.midnrreservations.com/

I'm sure others may join in but here's a starter list of recommended State Parks:

Ludington State Park - on Lake Michigan
Wilderness State Park (Pines Campground) - Mackinaw City
St. Ignace State Park - across the bridge in the upper peninsula
Tahquamenon Falls State Park - also in the upper peninsula

Just returned from our new, favorite campground near Traverse City - Platte River Campground in the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore

Hope this gives you a good start and enjoy the fall colors.

Look for quite a few of the Canadian Provincial Campgrounds to start shutting down services after the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend.  This year that is the weekend of October 7-9th with the 9th being the acutal holiday.  First thing shut down is typically water.  They'll start blowing the lines after the 9th.  A week or so later they're done and probably closed.
Can't speak to the Michigian ones - other than they are great places to go!

I'm from S.W. Michigan and besides Ludington (which is regularly voted #1) I love Petoskey State Park on Little Traverse Bay up North. Also, Yankee Springs closer to home (near Hastings MI) is my home away from home camping spot. Very nice on Gun Lake. Generally, the bathroom/shower units at the parks close by mid-October. Most MI State Parks only have an Electric hook up, although a few have more. Never met one I don't like yet.

Agreed on Ludington state park! I am from Ludington and it's a beautiful place to camp. Another idea is Hartwick pines SP in Grayling.

The state park in Traverse City is open year round (Keith Charters S.P.)  Color as of today in this area is about 40%, a couple weeks later than usual due to the cool and wet summer we experienced.  Coupled with that we still have not had a frost event as of yet.

Hi John-

My wife and I enjoy your YT videos.  This week we met a man at the beach here from upper MI who confirmed what you have said about Petrotsky State Park.  Talk soon.
