Unfortunately it depends on the model. The 171 and 179 that I have owned have had the FW tank is in front of the axle. I also question the wisdom of why FR would put it behind the axle in some models. I didn't like towing my 171 with my Honda Pilot (4500#) without a full FW tank. Ultimately I decided to upgrade TV and to the 17 179 to get away from the TV towing issues and lower ride with the 171. Sorry to hear this about your situation.

I wouldn't call 5000# marginal. And why buying a "light" trailer when you need a truck to pull it. I have to tow the trailer with a full freshwater tank because I'm camping off-grid. Pulling it with empty freshwater tank but full gray- and blackwater tank is a breeze.

The question I have is why did Forrest River put the freshwater tank behind the axle?
