Equivalent sized 6V and 12V batteries measured in watt-hours are the same. Period. Also, if the batteries are the same (measured in watt-hours), the 12V will last longer because the amperage going through each will be smaller. It's just physics. A 100 AH 12V battery has the same energy value as a 200 AH 6V battery. In use, the current draw in the 2 * 12V will be half what happens on the 2 * 6V setup. The issue is that people are comparing 225 AH 6V batteries to 85 AH 12V batteries. Those aren't even close to equivalent.

2- Trojan T-105 6 volt will have more energy than 2 Marine 12 volt "deep cycle dual purpose" batteries.
There are a very few true 12 volt deep cycle batteries out there, but they cost more than 6 volt batteries, They have similar energy performance. If money doesn't matter, and you want solar as well, look at the RV Li-Ion 12 volt cells. About $2000 for a light, energy dense, very quick charge rate, high discharge rate and 1000+ charge cycles battery. Still cheaper to buy a pile of 6 volt batteries, bu the Li-Ion is MUCH lighter.

I prefer to talk in amp hours. But it doesn't really matter. Amps times volts equals watts. Regardless, most battery monitoring systems keep track of amps in and amps out. My point was that 2 6v batteries wired in series provide or amp hours than 2 12v batteries wired in parallel.

So if you are using 6V batteries, you will need a minimum of 2. If you want to increase capacity with 6V batteries, you will have to do that in multiples of 2. That means 2, 4, 6, 8, and so on. If you are using 12V batteries, you can add in any increment, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and so on. The difference will be that regardless of how many 12V batteries you're using, they will be connected in parallel. The battery math stays the same. When you are comparing AH, you're not really looking at capacity unless you are also looking at voltage. That means watt-hours.

We run dual 6V batteries in our 179 and also have separate battery cases. The cases cost something like $10 apiece at Batteries + Bulbs, which is also where we bought the batteries.

Wasps are less likely to get in through the holes than they are through the openings where the wires pass. I have dual 6V batteries in separate cases. The lids have large openings. The holes I drilled are small. |

Your arithmetic leaves out a critical factor. When using 6v batteries, you need 2 of them to make 12 volts. So, 12 X 225 = 2700 WH 2 group 24 12v batteries provide about 160 aH, 2 group 27 about 210 aH

The standard batteries (usually one or two 12V batteries) are size 24. The 6V batteries that people have been talking about on this list are size 24.
Figure out your battery capacity by calculating how many watt-hours (WH)each one is by multiplying the AH rating by the voltage. Then you can just add up WH regardless of voltage or configuration (series/parallel does not matter when you use WH). E.G. 6V * 225 AH = 1350 WH an equivalent capacity 12V battery would be about 112 AH (12V * 112 AH = 1344 WH) You want longer run times, get more WH.

Drill holes in the bottom so they don't collect water. Also makes it easier for the wasps to get in......
