A few weeks ago I asked if anyone had used Camping World for repairs or modifications to their pods, as I was considering having them install windows in my pod. The consensus was that I should do it myself not only to save money but would probably do a better job.
So I finally bit the bullet and installed an opening window in the door of my 172 model today. It was quite easy to remove the door so I could work on it in my shop. I had one problem with cutting the hole. For some reason my jig saw base plate didn't stay at 90 degrees to the blade, so the edge of the cutout had a bevel on it. The size of the opening on the exterior face wound up smaller than the opening on the interior face. So after a few times shaving off material the window itself went in. The trim ring fit on the first try. So the window is in, looks good, and lets much needed daylight into the dark end of the pod. Next up will be to find and install a small window at each bunk for additional light and air flow. For those I might use a good sharp handsaw instead of the jigsaw. My thanks to you podders who explained in words and pictures how to do this project. The information was greatly appreciated! mountainman |

Better to have cut the opening a little small and then have to (carefully) enlarge it than to have cut it too big. Congratulations. Getting the nerve up to make that first cut was the hardest part. Making sure the base plate for the jigsaw is tight and square is one of the small details that help. Also, covering the door with masking tape to help protect the finish and cutting from the inside (teeth pulling toward the inside) with a fine-tooth, long blade really helps to avoid chipping of the outer gel-coat.

Make sure you have good quality blades and slower is better. Jigsaws are famous for beveled cuts and there can be numerous reasons. Any kind of side pressure, a blade that bends with temp, or trying to cut to fast. Make sure you have a good saw, cheaper is not better. Support the opening while you cut, you don't want piece to break off at end of cut.

As soon as I find a suitable window, I plan to replace the sliding windows over the bed on our 179. Pan to put it windows that are hinged at the top

Please post if you do find such windows. It is either that or finding some sort of cover like that for the Fantastic Fan that can be installed to allow the window to be open for ventilation while keeping the rain out.

The window framing and wall support is the size and shape of the current window.. So you will need to find one the same size and shape..
