Million dollar tract homes, low wage jobs, impossible commutes. That is why some of us left California.

I used to think Cape Cod was over crowded and I hated the summer traffic. When we moved to Vermont we found it to be quiet, rural, very low crime rate, 4 cars at the same intersection was a traffic jam. We can drive down roads and see turkeys, deer, moose and bears fairly regularly.
Gladly take the good with the bad. Got a heat wave today at 21 degrees today

In northern Michigan, by Traverse City, the saying goes, "a view of the bay is worth half your pay." So wages are low, but like Leo said, we get to see lots of deer (and kill and eat them as well), turkeys, eagles, fox and other critters on a regular basis.

I have deer and turkeys in my back yard, very low crime rate, good neighbors, and I can afford to live here. In California (where I was born) we would have to plan on working until we die to afford the good weather, and not have the wildlife and clean air/water we have here.

Looks like a nice spot to live, not far from Lake Michigan. Is there camping available at Horton Wildlife Refuge? If not, near there?

There are several camp grounds fairly near the refuge (Horicon) in both the communities of Horicon (private) and Waupun (county), and rural Mayville (county).y favorite is Ledge Park, with a number of nice wooded sites on a chunk of the ledge that is part of the Niagra escarpment. Check Dodge County Parks for information.

LOL. We are a year away from buying our tow vehicle and I have a 20 day trip planned for the r-pod we are 4 year away from buying. ;) So I totally understand.

I spent my middle school years and first 2 years of High School in Walloon Lake. Going to Traverse City to go shopping was a big deal. I now live in California and love it, can't stand the cold, but that is another story. ;)
