Autos pulling trailers have a hard limit of the double nickel (55 MPH) in California, except where posted otherwise (some of the interstates have higher limits). We typically stay within 5 MPH of that to keep the smokey bears happy...

Picked up179 today. Thanks to this forum I had a good pre-acceptance checklist to use. Got it home and ran through everything again. So far everything checks ok. I'm embarrassed, but you are correct the new pods come with 225-75 R 15 D rated tires so my concern about speed rating was unfounded. Biggest concern right now is the weather...having a T-storm with a lot of pea-sized hail..oh well...stuff happens. I'll go check the Pod when it stops. 😢

I am not sure, but I think the newest 'Pods come with load range D tires. Mine came with load range C tires. It was a great improvement to upgrade them to load range D.
We were towing in Wyoming with a speed limit of 80 mph. I was still doing 60 mph. We did not get run over. We were mostly on the Interstates. If I am on a 2-lane road and I see a line-up behind me, I look for a place to pull off and let them pass. I have not had to do that but once or twice though. |

Welcome & congrats!
We got our R-179 last July, and we love it. I think you will be very happy pulling yours with your Tundra. We had a Tundra several years ago, and it was a very nice truck. Plenty of pulling power for an R-pod. We've got an F-150 now, and it pulls the R-pod very, very easily.

You won't get run over, and you won't have to have any white knuckle passing experiences. My 2007 hemi Dodge likes 62 with the pod with top overdrive gear locked out. Any complaints - well, get over it.

We just spent 3 weeks in your state with our 178 and just drove 65 and didn't get run over. What I found is that 65 is the best speed to pull the pod. I have pulled all kinds of trailers my hope life but this one was different. We like how easy it is to set up.
Welcome and have happy trails. |

Thanks for the welcome. I'm from San Angelo initially, but was never stationed at Goodfellow AFB. Was a C-130 Navigator and stationed in Abilene a couple of times. Retired in 2001, spent 9 yrs working in North Carolina...then came back to the Lone Star state. Look forward to getting out with the 179. My only real concern are the tires; more specifically, the speed rating. If I limit myself to 65mph, in a state where 75 is the speed limit on most farm to market roads, I'm going to get run over. Hate to buy a new camper only to turn around and buy two new tires, but may have to. I'd be interested in any thoughts on the subject.

Welcome and Congratulations. I was stationed at Goodfellow AFB for AIT training in 1984 an went back there for a class in the early 90's. My first sighting of a tornado was while we were on our end of course exercise. It was on the other side of lake O.C. Fisher.
We also have and like the 179. Although the bathroom is small, we thought we would like and get more use out of the larger kitchen with its storage. I have done a number of modifications. The 179 lends itself well to customizing if you like to do things with it. It is currently at the factory for repair following an accident last December when we hit a combination of ice and wind. We will be picking it up from the factory next month, hopefully as good as, or better than new. We will be getting an awning with it since they will be replacing the wall and can put the newer style with the proper reinforcement to hold the awning. We will have a one-of-a-kind 2016 RP-179 after that. ![]() We hope you have many fun trips and make many good memories with your new R-Pod. |
