I can't believe a new RPOD should already be rusting, but alas, I guess all metal left to the elements is vulnerable. I used some green liquid once that came from Sherwin Williams. It killed the rust, and made it turn black. I don't know if I should use this or not. Any ideas?

A little naval jelly and then rustproof paint. If the rust is heavy then wire brush it first to remove the loose stuff first.
The steps, and the water tank supports get rust. Also the frame at the tongue, battery box, propane holder should be inspected annually and maintained. Painted steel (most trailers) will eventually show some rust. Just have to maintain it.

Hey HenryV,
Pretty much has to do with road and weather conditions plus original paint stuff. I use rust preventative, sandpaper and a wire brush, primarily once a year prior to season. Sure the SW product is ok, most rust preventatives turn rust black. Clean well and repaint. |

Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer is what I used after wire-brushing the rusty areas. After it dried, I finished it off with a top coat of gloss black that matched the rest of the frame better. The wire brushing was probably overkill as only loose rust really needs to be removed. It will convert the surface rust to a paintable surface. By itself, it is durable. Top coating helps to match the surrounding surfaces.

If the green stuff from Sherwin Williams is Ospho, that's the best. Light sanding to remove loose rust, paint on. It will turn black. Wash then paint with enamel. Ospho is available at most decent hdw stores. It forms a chemical bond with the rusted metal.
