A walk amongst giants. Similar to this forum!
![]() Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is a gorgeous wooded park on the Smith River about 475 miles north of Monterey, California. The sites are particularly suited for tent camping or a small trailer like the Pod. They are clean and private as is the entire campground and park. A stay at Jedediah must include a walk through the Stout Memorial Grove just across the footbridge on the Smith River. These towering redwoods will make you feel very, very small. Occasionally they fall. A passing ranger told of us of one that fell this spring and was heard several miles away. Wether you are passing through like we were or as a destination, The Jed is worth a visit! Some pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

fwunder,
niced pics. we were in Oregon 4 years ago never made it to CA. We're going to Yellowstone in august. Question on your bike set-up. We purchsed the same bike rack that you have. Did you use a hitch extender or a extra long ball hitch to accomadate the bike rack between the TV and trailer? Thanks, Gary

Hi Gary,
That Swagman Bike rack works great for us! Many thanks to CharlieM for suggesting it. I was lucky that the Reese WDH I have has enough space to accommodate the the rack receiver. Didn't need any modification from what I had. Also, my 4Runner has an electric rear window which has been great for grabbing stuff out of the back with the bike rack attached. fred

Hi John, Good question! I know it's a bit controversial but we carry the genny in the back of the TV under cover (Yamaha Cover). Never even noticed it the entire trip. It had a full tank when we left and 3/4+ when we we returned. I used it for a total of two hours maybe, if that. My battery setup was a pleasant surprise - dual 230 AH GC2s. The longest dry camp we did on this trip was five nights and batteries did just fine. We are careful and spent most of the time exploring outside of the pod. No Television but did run CPAP 12v. every night. The only reason I even fired up the genny was for wife's hair dryer - really. The rest of the trip, we were towing pretty long distances between stops for batteries to recover or had hookups. I carried a new 2 gallon gas can, but never used it. An aside, a five gallon bucket with a lid was invaluable for emptying grey water tank as needed as was a couple of collapsable 5 gallon tanks for filling fresh water. We consistently used 10 gal fresh water per day with showers and 15 when wife washed her long hair. The five gallon bucket was a great way to measure usage. Yeah, we were not as careful with water as we were with electric. More than you asked for, but now you know the rest of the story... ![]() fred

Fred, Really nice trip. All the work you did in prep and buying the Pod paid off. Those long trips really flush out the good and bad of the rig. Glad to have been part of it................ |

Charlie,
I owe you more than one whatever you're having. We had a great trip! Your advice, as well as others here, made it a success. Maybe a little luck too. Half the fun was in the planning! I think you and I discussed that sometime last January - the planning phase. Thanks again! fred
