I know and have read many times that when adjusting a Weight Distribution Hitch (Equalizer in my case), the truck and trailer should be loaded as if hitting the road. My variable and hence my question is whether to adjust with the 35 gallons of water or not?? Some trips we go to full service CG's and I don't load it down with the water and some trips are with a full tank of water. The 179 has its tank between the axle and tongue. Is it better to have that extra load during adjustment, then without the water the hitch could possible be over adjusted? Or better in the other case in which it would be under adjusted?

A) it's 30 gallons.
B) at the tongue, it equals about 65 pounds difference. with/without. Not an issue. The adjustments are not precise enough to adjust for that change. |

Also, more weight in the FW tank on the 179 means fewer sway issues.

Well, it is 35 gallons if you fill the hot water heater too.

Actually, 36 gallons since the tank is 30 gallons and the HWH is 6 gallons. Possibly a quart more if you count what is in the water lines.

The FR website specs are misleading....it says FW tank is 36 gallon...makes sense that it is 30 plus 6 hot water.
Anyway, I knew it wouldn't be the full weight of the water at the tongue, just didn't know it would only be 65 pounds. Thanks furpod. That makes me feel better. Time to find a flat spot of pavement and adjust. Then hit the road! |

Actually it lists capacity at 36 gals. Which the water heater is part of. The grey and black are 30 or 35 depending upon model.

How about we go with.. since it's a 179.. that it has 30 gallons right in front of the axle, and 6 more gallons that are behind the axle.. so they offset at least 6 gallons of weight from in front of the axle. Probably closer to 8, but I am not doing the math right now..
BUT.. again, the WDH adjustments, whether chain links, bolt holes or ball tilt, are not precise enough to make a difference over wet or not when towing. ![]() |

Pardon me, but the 6 gallons of hot water are also in front of the axle in the 179. It may be different for other models, but I think it applies for the 180 as well. The black water tank is also in front of the axle. The gray water tank is behind the axle.

You are correct sir.. LOL.. I have been working with a 178 owner all morning.. my bad. BUT I still stand by the fact that the rough adjustments of a standard WDH won't notice or care. |
