Topic: Camping/podding in bear areas Posted: 20 Jun 2017 at 1:27pm |
This is more of a general camping questions than an R-pod question. We are thinking of taking the pod to places in the high Seirra that ave campgrounds but also have bear boxes for food. We have never been in areas like this and were wondering if anyone had experience with this type of issue and a camper.
1. do bears tear into RV's like automobiles to find food?
2. does the RV fridge count as safe storage?
3. Our Yeti cooler says its bear proof, but is it?
4. Canned food attract bears?
Im sure there are other precautions but I cant think of any right now.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Answers to 1-4 is:gun. About the fridge.... really? Like, really?. Your yeti cooler is more likely to be stolen for its name by a human than a bear mess with it.
Just camp, cook food, make noise (have a good time) and don't worry about it. I have camped in bear dense areas cooking bacon and elk steak in a tent and had no problems. clean up well and don't leave food out.

Ditto!! You will have more trouble with raccoons, skunks and crows, than with bears.

If a bear can't smell or see food, it will likely move on. Keep things tidy and you'll probably be just fine. "Bear boxes" are usually for those folks who have tents or soft sided RVs.

There was a Honda in the early 70s that the yosemite bears would selectively break into. No rain gutters, and the rubber molding was just over the curve on the roof. That Yeti cooler looks to be bear proof for about 2 minutes because of the latches for the lid. If you have ever watched a bear tear in to something--- they are not gentle.

The first word a momma bear teaches its cubs is, "Coleman" because that's where the food is. The best thing to do is check with the rangers in the area where you want to camp. That being said, I saw a hole that was torn in a chain link fence by a bear, albeit, a polar bear in Newfoundland.

For safety's sake we cook outside the pod when in bear country, like when we go to Glacier N.P. Not much a bear can't get into if they put their mind, and paws to it. Saw an ad about the Yeti cooler, claim they don't approve it with their name unless it can withstand a bear attack for 30 minutes. Hmmm, that is pretty impressive if you have ever been up close and personal with one; even seeing one at a zoo.

That has always been my "bear defense tactic"..........camp/hike with someone who cannot run as fast as me. Darwin takes over and it becomes a matter of "survival of the fittest".
