Just a suggestion - the Army Corps of Engineers maintain a lot of campgrounds, also base MWR camping facilities where available on DoD bases have a Campground Host. They have both volunteer and contract positions. Normally the volunteer positions you get the campsite free and work for nothing. The contract jobs you bid on, number of hours specified X how much you need for pay. Come in with reasonable bid. For the MWR facilities I think they give preference to Veterans.

Thanks for the info, Mystic-
I will check out the site you mentioned. I'm really grateful for this forum. I always knew that I wanted a Rod, but had to make it affordable to "just do it". I'll check out some other sites and see if there's a good fit. I think my thought process is to stay in the midwest for the summer and head south for the winter. But....then, I fear, the over-loaded hours become a problem during winter months. Thanks again- Tee (and Sadie)

Okay, David....
You sound like me in many ways. I was worried about staying too long in one place, but was still curious about the adventure. I'm grateful for the information. "Big wheels keep on Rollin'" Tee (and Sadie)

i had looked into working at Signal Mountain Lodge in the Tetons - outside of Jackson Hole, WY for this summer. For various reasons, i decided to stay put for another year and work my regular job until i have a few more dollars socked away in savings.
One downside i found as a single person is that RV space is limited in these kind of places so they give them to couples first, and usually there are none left over for solo workers. They wanted to house me in the dorms with the 20-somethings. That was another reason i said 'no thanks' to working there this summer :) the website i used to find the jobs was: Coolworks.com It is really well-organized and laid out Check it out! And good luck to you :) |

I was a campground host, for the first time, last year: Host Post My camper, at 19'2" is actually a little smaller than the 180 models. I did not find the SIZE of my camper to be a bad experience. I got one day per week to go home to do laundry, cut grass, grocery shop, etc. 7-10 days is about the limit of what I can store so, this worked out OK. My take on the matter is - there are places to host and there are places to host. My tour of duty was VERY busy (working nearly full time). However, not all are like that. The less busy/more tranquil places (in Indiana) tend to have waiting lists of folks who want to host. The busier places struggle to find hosts. The duties (and amount of duties) vary by property. I did NO restroom or shower cleaning. However, at some places, hosts do. Like you, I am single and camp with my dog. For me personally, it was staying too long in one place. 3-4 days most anywhere and I'm ready to hitch up and move on. I am at this Park quite a bit for other volunteer activity, also. It is wonderful that folks step up and volunteer to do this. If you feel like "giving back" and or just like interacting with other like-minded folks - give it a shot! |

Most of today's WORKAMPERS and hosts do so with a motor home, 5th wheel or large travel trailer.
Are there any podders out there that have embarked on this endeavor? I am single but have applied for many positions at several locations (within the past week) and have offered to do lawncare, office or maintenance/cleaning. Love to hear from anyone that has tried ;-)
