Hey folks, just received our RPOD 179 after many struggles with the dealer, but ultimately it turned out well. Car and rv dealers seem to be great when selling what's on the lot, but when you want something else, they really seems to struggle. I was surprised to note that although they have improved almost every suggestion on YouTube, they have removed the USB outlets from the kitchen in our 2017 1/2. Or, did they forget to install it? I find this very odd but it must have saved them a couple hundred bucks. I also find it odd that there are no 12 volt outlets. Maybe they think their inverter is so good that these should not be necessary?
Anyway, after calling our favorite hotels a few months back, and finding the ocean view suites went from $340-to $380, I was teetering on the edge. When I discovered that we Could not book these rooms with our 8 month old and 3 year old daughters, and would have to book a different room for $450, with no ocean views, that pushed me over the fence. Also odd that it doesn't come with a lug wrench or jack. Guess I use my car jack to change the tire? Or just call AAA. Not to try and figure out what size lugs this thing has. Have an awesome day!! |

Hello Todd,
Welcome and congratulations! We have a 2016 RP-179. Ours came with neither 12V outlets nor USB outlets. They are actually easy to install. Then you can put them where you want them instead of having them where someone else thought was a good location. As for the cost, think more like a couple of bucks instead of a couple hundred. They aren't that expensive. Did they remove the USB outlets or just relocate them? The RP-179 does NOT come with an inverter. It comes with a converter for converting 120V to 12V. This serves to charge the battery (or batteries if you have dual 6V) and to supply power to the 12V items in the 'Pod. You will need to have a battery installed as the power from the converter isn't clean enough to run some items reliably. The difference is that an inverter goes from 12V to 120V. If you want an inverter, it is something you would need to purchase separately. For a lug wrench, the lug nuts are a standard 3/4" You should invest in a torque wrench for tightening the lug nuts. You can catch them on sale at Harbor Freight if you have one in your area for a reasonable cost. The alloy rims of the 'Pods can lead to lose lug nuts. If the wheel is removed, they need to be re-torqued after 50 miles, then after 100 miles, and then checked to make sure they stay tight. Other messages in the forum can elaborate further. As for a jack, I tried my vehicle jack once. It bent. I bought a hydraulic trolley jack at Walmart. I also made a block that allows me to jack at the riser while not putting pressure on the axle. That is important as using the axle for jacking can damage it. You can see the block in my mods, a link to which is in my signature. |

Interesting, I saw a Youtube video of a 2016 RPOD 179 that had 2 USB outlets right next to the AC in the kitchen and the guy was talking about how useful that is. I think I'll also eBay the current TV and grab a 12v, not that it'll get used that much but with. 3 year old, a good movie can avoid chaos at night. I do have an inverter I can use but may have to pick another as this may not be pure sine. I've charged computers before so may be fine.
I'm on a 6 volt system although they had to cut one of the plastic nubs off one of the boxes where they meet (didn't tell me), so I need a piece of plastic and some caulk to patch that gap. Adding an alarm today or tomorrow and looking for ways to make battery removal more difficult. Left a light on in the rig last night to deter, and our cover hides the batteries so out of sight out of mind. The mattress in ours is MUCH nicer than the springy thing I payed on at the dealer. If it's decent it too may go on craigslist as I have purchased a nice 8" foam mattress. We'll try this once and if it's good we may return the foam mattress. All set with the torque wrench and thanks for the reminder about the lugs. I think checking after 50-100 miles is true for cars as well, better check my truck as it has new tires. Thanks for the great input Stephen. |

I used some strap aluminum and made battery locks. That is one of the mods you can see in the mods link in my signature. If you are not hooked to shore power, you may want to put in a battery cut-off switch also. Otherwise, the parasitic power draws will drain your batteries. Some, like the propane/CO detector can't be switched off so a battery cut-off is the only way to halt the parasitic drain.
I bought a small, Bestek 150 Watt inverter for the TV. I have not been able to try it out since our R-Pod is at the factory for repair. It is very small and when I plugged it in to the truck's 12V power, it was very quiet. It is much less expensive than a 12V television. I don't think it is pure sine. However, I think it will work okay. |

I was just wondering about the inverter - my 2017 rp 179 does not have any 12-volt plugs - is there a way to jury-rig something? I have 2 batteries and 600 watt solar panel, so batteries aren't the problem. I do have a USB plug by the radio, which is 12-volt. I'm afraid to use it because last year I plugged my ipad in to charge before leaving for a hike. when I came back, the battery was fried either coincidentally or the voltage is not regulated well.

No need to jury rig. You can find a 12V wire behind the radio. From that, you can wire in a 12V outlet. I wired in multiple outlets. One has two 12V power outlets and one USB charger outlet. Another is a 12V power outlet with a USB charger outlet next to it. I wired in a voltmeter next to the panel for tank and battery levels with a momentary switch so it only reads when I press the switch.
USB outlets should only provide 5V power. It is possible that you have a defective USB outlet or that something happened to it. When you say you are running 2 batteries, I am guessing that they are two 6V batteries wired in series to provide 12V or two 12V batteries wired in parallel. Whichever, 600W of solar power may have contributed if your solar charge controller wasn't limiting the voltage correctly. You can always get access to the back of the USB outlet and check the voltage reading from there. |

Yep, there's always been a( regulated?) charger in the entertainment unit so I'd be surprised if that fried the iPad. Maybe I'll try an old iPhone first 😊.
RPOD removing the USBs on the right side of the kitchen is a backward step, but trailers in general having no 12 volt is beyond weird. |

Question: Can you plug into the AC outlets when on battery power (and drain em fast), or are you completely cut off without installing 12 cold and USB? I have other power sources including a Stanley Powermax which I've had no problems with this far. One trick I know is you can't run the compressors on these types for more than 10 min or they fry. Had an old Sears model for 20 years. Hose finally cracked and wasn't worth replacing.

To have 120V power, you would need to install an inverter or use a portable one. Without installing 12V outlets, you would not have 12V power access for plug-in accessories, including an inverter. The furnace and lights run on 12V. The refrigerator can run on 12V, but I would not recommend it with the possible exception being that you have solar power that can likely support it. Propane or shore power is best for the refrigerator. If you don't want to install any 12V or USB outlets, you could use the Stanley Power Station. Installing the outlets would be less expensive, but if you already have the Power Station, you could put that off.
The initial reason I installed 12V outlets was so that I could run my CPAP machine without using an inverter. It is actually powered by 12V, so I just got the 12V cord and installed 12V power outlets. The first was by the outlet at the base of the bed. The second was near the TV as we decided to change the direction in which we made up the bed and slept in it to make it easier for me to get in and out over the top of my wife's legs with less disturbance. |
