heading out in a couple weeks for a 10 day trip. my wife wants to bring the cat, I don't. if we do, what can I expect as far as the traveling goes? unlike a dog, when and where does the cat go to the bathroom? what am I getting myself into overall? hogone

we took our cat to Alaska and back no trouble. we kept a litter under the back seat of the pickup for daytime  and one in the pod when camped  work for us and the cat.

It depends on the cat. The one we've taken camping isn't too fond of being locked up in a carrier, but it's unsafe to let them have free roam of the TV. My wife typically sits in the back seat to calm the cat (out of the carrier) while I drive.

A 13x9 aluminum foil cake pan makes a good litter box that's cheap and disposable.

Henry, the camping cat, goes with us everywhere. From Canada to Florida to Maine and lots of points between. The vast majority of the time, he sleeps on passenger lap. Sometimes, he'll get up to navigate.



While traveling, he will use his box in the back of the TV. I modified the locker behind the bathroom to accommodate his box when camping.







Henry really likes to have his staff (us) with him at all times. After paying a fairly steep price for leaving him at home with a sitter, we made accommodations to bring him along. He holds a grudge for days! He really seems to enjoy the pod. I figure it's just a big comfy cage to him and we are his captured human staff for his enjoyment. He is fun to have along.

Yeah, I understand. For short trips (like to vet), Henry rides in a soft carrier. Longer trips, he gets the full TV, but prefers just to sit (sleep) on passenger pillow lap.

I would suggest just taking him/her on some short trips in the TV to see how he handles it. Henry complains (vocally) about his carrier, but isn't violent. Our previous cat turned into a pretty dangerous devil-cat when she saw the carrier. Henry is the definition of a lap-cat. That's his safe place.

We just carry Henry's litter box in the back of the TV. He knows where it is and uses it when he needs to. We are lucky, I guess, because he really doesn't seem to mind traveling in the TV and especially likes rest stops - talking to anyone who walks by. Perhaps he is asking for passerbys to call 911, but he doesn't try to escape.

We have a couple of 4-month-old kittens that are going on their first camping trip this weekend. We hope that by getting them used to it early in life, they'll deal with it better when they're older.

We'll have to consider your solutions for litter box location though.

my truck is a 2 door model, and I think that's what im struggling with. really no place for the cat to roam or litter box. hogone

I see the problem. I do know some cats will travel in a carrier for quite a long time. A niece of mine just brought her cat back from Singapore in a carrier on the plane. I think drugs may have been involved. If we tried that with Henry, I'm sure he would embarrass us.

The only other option, I guess, is to let the cat drive and you get in the back! Smile
