Topic: Tow Vehicle Posted: 18 Dec 2016 at 2:12pm |
After everything is done, trailer is purchased, hitch is installed at the r.v. dealer, w/d sytem is all set, I find out that the tongue weight exceeds my T.V.s rating. i was fixated on the tow capacity of 2700 pounds. The 172 i bought is 2120 pounds, plenty of room. I dont carry lots of cargo. I guess the tongue weight on the subaru outback is max 200 pounds do to crumple zones they have in the rear, to make for more crash safety. I had a 1500 pound popup that i pulled with my other subaru crosstrek, which had a capacity of 1500 pounds. i pulled that thing no sweat, even in the mountains ok lake george N.Y. . With 1200 pounds of more towing capacity and only a 600 pound heavier trailer, what could go wrong. It probably would be ok, but i cant bring myself to risk being sued , or face charges of recklessness. If anything happened, they would jump on that. I'm currently looking to get a 2014 toyota tacoma sr5 i found with 8600 miles on it (brand new). I think a few of you use them to tow. Not sure if it has a tow package, but it does have a hitch set up and 7 pin plug. I'm seeing 3500 pounds tow capacity minimum on this vehicle. I cant seem to get a straight out answer on tongue weight capacity. I am still looking for answers, does anyone know here? i cant imagine it isnt able to pull this trailer.

If the 7 pin plug is factory installed it probably has the factory tow package. If so the rating is 6500/650. Without the package it's 3500/350 so you're good either way. The tow package will include a transmission cooler, ~130A alternator and a class IV hitch. If the present owner still has the factory window sticker it will be there. If not a dealer should be able to check for you. The Tacoma will pull the Pod great, especially if it has the V6.

Any Toyota dealer should be able to run the vin and tell you every option the truck has from the factory.

Charlie's advice that either Tacoma will pull the pod is good but there's another factor you should consider. Since you're purchasing a tow vehicle and not just getting by with what you have, consider going to the higher tow rating because there might come a day in a year or few when you want to go to the next size larger camper. To do this, you'll need the 6500 lb rating.
We started with a truck that could tow 3,800 lbs when we purchased our pod and the choice of the pod was determined in a good measure by what we could tow. The truck has performed quite well for us. However, if we want to go to the next size larger (8' width with tandem axles), we'll need a stronger tow vehicle.

Ok, when i look at the tow package list on new trucks, it appears the difference is a tranny cooler, oil cooler, and power steering cooler. Is there no difference in the trucks suspension or maybe gear ratios?? if i got this truck, and had the coolers added later, aren't i getting a 6500 lb tow vehicle?? they say the tow package is 650 bucks. Is that available if i wanted? this crap is so confusing. Thanks in advance. Oh, btw , yes it has the 4L 6 cylinder motor.

This is my guess, and only my guess. The payload ratings have no mention of the towing package so I think the suspension is unchanged. The gear ratios are also the same. I think the main difference is the Class IV hitch and its attachment to the truck frame. That's really important. The transmission and oil coolers are also important. The 130A alternator and heavy duty battery are nice, but not as important. The seven pin Bargman connector is, of course, essential and it must be correctly wired with #10 AWG wire for the charging and ground conductors. I think your best bet is to run the VIN by Toyota, as suggested by furpod, and find out what is really on the truck. Don't trust aftermarket add ons by a previous owner unless you can really verify them.
