Greetings all...
Bob & Necia are renting a 177 in June for a week. I've been looking at R-Pods for about a year and at last we're going to get out and give it a go. I decided that renting before buying is money well spent. At least in our case. We did not specify the 177. It's is what they had available. I look at it like this... There are no bad R-Pods. Just different combinations. Our story is probably pretty darn common... Both retired in January. It's time to go out a see stuff, do stuff, and see what sort of adventures there are to have. We've been tent campers, but a travel trailer has major appeal to us. We're renting so we can find out how we are at travel trailer life on the road. I'm pretty cranked up about it and cannot seem to get it off my mind. TV is a 2011 Tacoma, long wheel base, 4 door, 4WD. Equal-i-zer 6,000, Tekonsha P3 controller. The hitch and controller choices were made based on the members posts on this forum. Thank you for that. I think it will be an easy and uneventful towing experience, regardless of weather, wind, or Semi's flying by. From the trailer point of view, I feel comfortable with the homework we've done. Where we need a little advice is on finding campgrounds and getting space at them. Our trip plan is to head north from Phoenix toward Flagstaff. From there perhaps east into the New Mexico mountains. Who knows. Any tips you could offer about finding and securing overnight space is the sort of help we need. We are clueless. Are there apps for this? Does it require advance reservations or do we just show up and hope for the best. Well, you get the picture. Newbies. Clueless newbies. Thoughts? BB "Life Is A One Lap Race!" |

The 177 is a fantastic model. We have had ours for 5+ years now and have enjoyed it immensely. How long before you take off? If you have a few weeks, take your smart phone or laptop and check out campgrounds, national forest campgrounds, national parks, or whatever is to your liking and make some reservations. We don't like to reach a destination to find out the place is packed out and then have to travel extra miles to find a place to set up. Bob and Necia, have fun with this, plan a bit in advance so you will know for sure you have a place to set up, unless you don't mind sleeping along a busy road at a Walmart, at least the rates are cheap (free).

Bob & Necia,
You are far from clueless! You have obviously done your homework. You will have a great time! Don't dwell so much on the particular unit you are renting. Concentrate on the lifestyle. I got a feeling you already figured that out! Just one suggestion... A small bag of frozen peas in the freezer will insure that the fridge is working correctly and bring health and happiness and, some say, good fishing in retirement and beyond! ![]() Have fun! No doubt you will! Fred

Thanks for the welcome Leo B!
The R-Pod Owners Forum has been very helpful in getting us along on the learning curve. Good people here, that's for sure.

Thanks for the thoughts Jato,
We pick up the 177 mid June so there is time to find an app that will, with any luck, get us a spot each night. I'm with you... Hate to need to stop, but gotta keep going because there is no space. Kinda takes the fun out of things. I reckon it's a good practice to plan on shorter driving days to leave enough time to get parked, hooked up, and settled. The Walmart option is fine, but not first choice. A back up if needed.
Going to look up opportunities around Flagstaff. Smart phone in hand, and searching for campground information. I feel like a little kid excited to get started... |

Hi Fred,
Thanks for the tip on frozen peas! Pretty smart idea. It seems that fishing is part of my DNA. I'm smiling about your ability to see that fishing works for me. Actually, the lifestyle is the only unknown for us. Judging by the way R-Podders act on this forum the lifestyle is full of good folks who are pretty enthusiastic about sharing the fun. Thanks again...

Welcome and congratulations on retirement! ![]() +1 on jato's comments. Personally, I almost never go anywhere without making a reservation. For me, it takes a little stress out of things, in that I know I have a campsite when I arrive. You'll get a "feel" for how much you like to travel each day. I find 5-6 hours (of driving) is good for me. 8 or more hours and I'm pretty tired/stiff when I arrive. Not mentioned are the KOA campgrounds. I like these for "overnight/on the way" stops. |
