We are thinking about purchasing a Rpod 178. We have not seen one but feel it may seem more open than the 179 which we have seen. The only other trailer we are thinking of is a Rockwood 2306 which weighs 3800 lbs. our tow max is 4500 so I am nervous about it. Looking for input on the 178 to help me decide.

Welcome to the group! A 178 is a nice floor plan. We have a 179 because we wanted the larger kitchen. I would suggest finding a dealership that has one and hang in it for a while, stretch out on the bed and see how comfortable you are in it. They all have their pluses.

We bought a 2015 RP178 a year ago and really like it. Since then they introduced the 180 and now I'm torn between the two. The 180 has a larger full bathroom with separate shower. But has a smaller dinette area. It's a toss up but sometimes wish we would have had the choice of the 180.
Either way you decide to go is a win win situation...

I knew nothing about trailers until a couple weeks ago when I went to the dealership and checked out three or four models. I went back a second time and am sold on the 178. A few things that sold me:
I'm sold, and I'd never been in one before a couple weeks ago. Likely buying next week. |

We discussed the 178 and the 179. We bought the 179 for several reasons:
- when you first walk in, there is a nice little kitchen, with a large window. I felt like I was 'home'. the 178 has no counter except when you leave the insert on top of the sink. - we like to sit at the dinette and look out the window. there is a nice large window in the dinette slide and the 178 has only side windows. - the 179 has a closet with hanging rod, mirror on door and 3 drawers below. Not in the 178. - the 179 has a cabinet that is almost floor to ceiling, by the door (I've put all my food and dishes, plates, cups in there (so happy not to have to stoop down to the floor to get at these things) - I'm happy not to have a large window along the bed, just smaller ones on head and foot ends. I was forever hanging up towels and things to block out the light when trying to sleep in our older campers. The 178 does have a larger dinette, but when we each sat on one side with our feet up, leaning against the wall of the front of camper, my husband couldnt sit up straight (6 ft tall) because of the curved wall. But it mostly depends on how you will be using it. It's usually just the two of us. I can see wanting the larger dinette if you tend to have people visiting or need room for 4 to sleep as opposed to 2 or 3. Going to see both models and sitting in them for a while really helps with decision making.

I'm really glad that the R-Pod is not a One-Size-Fits-All (but really doesn't) type of camper. I like that Forest River has given us a range of models from which each of us either has picked or will pick the one most suitable for that person's needs/desires/preferences. In our case, it was the 179. While a bigger bathroom would have been nice, we decided the large kitchen best met our needs.
The only thing I wish Forest River could figure out would be how to squeeze a walk-around queen bed in there. I sure would take a smaller dinette in exchange for a walk-around queen. |

The thing that bothered me about the 179 is that when you sit down at the dinette, you're basically staring at the bathroom. Also, the dinette itself is a little cumbersome to get in and out of.
The issue I had with the 178 is the dinette again, just clumsy. Perhaps because I'm taller. I liked the big long window by the bed. Both of them had the wet bath which just didnt work with my height. So I went with the 180. Goodluck, it is quite a chore to decide.

Welcome! I'm new here too but my wife and I just went through the process. We went back and forth on models for 2 years trying to decide. We finally narrowed it down to the 178 or 179. In the end, we liked the 179 for the kitchen, couch and bed leaving the wet bath something we'll just have to make work. Good luck deciding!
One thing that wasn't obvious to us early on in the process were the differences in internal cabinet space and external storage compartments between models. |
