First 2 nights at Artillery Ridge Campground Gettysburg, PA We have mixed feelings about this campground super clean bathrooms and free showers, excellent service from all staff, Campsites were only so-so not level, small and close together with no privacy. And the rate at $60 per night (with full hookups) was very high. It was very close to all the Gettysburg attractions. I will give it 3 of 5 stars.

Next was Big Meadow campground Shenandoah NP Virginia this was dry camping no hookups. The campsite were paved large and level with some shrubbery in between sites. Bathrooms were spotless, staff and hosts could not do enough for you. We planned to stay 3 nights but stayed 5. Best of all the hiking trails left from the campground which is on the Appalachian Trail. Can't beat the rate of $17 per night and a 50% discount with the Senior Pass cost was $8.50 per night (that was pre-season rate it goes to $20 during the season but still would have been $10 with the Senior Pass). I really like dry camping so this gets 4.5 of 5

Finally 1 night at Codorus State Park near Hanover, PA this was an electric only site in a very nice clean and well wooded campground on a lake. I strongly recommend this if passing through. Be warned the park has a Water Park within and based on the size of the parking lots I imagine it could be quite hectic. Best for off season. The rate was $31.50 per night. I'll give this a 4 of 5 during off season I think I would avoid it during the season unless you have children.

Thank you. My wife and I would like to do part of the Appalachian Trail and/or Blue Ridge Parkway. It sounds wonderful.

Stephen if you go to the Shenandoah NP be sure you are well supplied it is a long way to a real grocery store, up to an hour depending on which campground. Their are camp stores with essential groceries in the park.

Thanks. We would be pretty well stocked if we were to make that trip. How is it to drive? I know about the 45 mph or lower speed limits. It is more the incline grades and curves that concern me.

It is slow going I just put the automatic in 3rd gear and left it there except on some steep down grades I used 2nd. The curves were not a problem and the road is smooth. If you are going to Big Meadow Campground you may wish to enter at Luray, VA we entered at Front Royal which mile is 0 and Big Meadow is at mile 51.

Thanks. Our plans right now are somewhat nebulous as to route and timing. Many years ago, we stayed at one of the camping areas. At that time, we were tent camping. This will be quite different.

I like Big Meadows, also. I have stayed there and at Loft Mountain.
I seem to recall a way station at Big Meadows with gasoline, food, etc.
There may have been one at Loft Mountain, also.

The only down side for me was that ticks were an issue at both.

We stayed at Cunningham Falls State Park last year. Was pleased with the campground and not too far from Gettysburg. Stopped at Hannover for a tour on the way home. That was fun.

Must make a point to visit Big Meadow. For years I drove past the area, up and down 81, going between school (VaTech) and home in Maryland. Still have great fondness for the area.

Thanks!

I don't want anything to do with ticks. Someone I know was bitten by a lone star tick, and now is allergic to red meat. http://alpha-gal.org/
If we do stay, we will certainly take precautions to avoid tick bites.
