Picking up the 183G from the dealership about a week ago. Going to take it out for the first time in a couple of weeks.

Hi Everyone, I'm dreaming of getting an r-pod 176t. It weighs about 2600lbs dry, and max weight of 3800 or so (I'm estimating).
I have a 2002 Toyota 4runner with a 3.4l v6. Seems it might be a bit sketchy to use my 4runner as a tow vehicle, yet I see some people here on this forum using even smaller vehicles. My 4runner is rated at 5000lbs tow capacity, but I live in Tahoe and we have winding mountain passes... I just want to be safe... Would love your input on if I need to buy a Tundra (gulp... hope not!). If I can keep the 4runner I'll likely buy the pod, but if I have to get a new vehicle, I may have to hold off :-(

Welcome to the group! We tow our 179 with a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan. We live in the mountains in Northeast Vermont and also travel in the New Hampshire White Mountains. We have made numerous trips up and down the east Coast and have not had any problems with weight or acceleration.

Welcome to the forum! ![]() I'm guessing you would be OK with the 4runner - not great but, OK. On the flat definitely. However, you may not win many drag races going up mountains. The general feel I get from the majority, historically, is that a "decent" V6 with a 5000lbs tow capacity is acceptable. In short, I'd give it a go. |

We have towed our 177 with an '08 Explorer which came with a 4.0 V-6 210 hp and haven't had any issues with it even as we have been West 3x with that, once to Glacier NP and twice to RMNP in Colorado, so I feel we have given it a good workout. Now we upgraded to a '13 Explorer with a 3.5 V-6 and 290 hp, will see how that performs this summer once we commence camping. Don't expect any problems but like David posted, "Don't expect to win ANY drag races going up the mountains, just take your time and enjoy God's magnificent handiwork.

You will be fine with the 4runner and the 3.4! That was one of Toyota's best engines that is just about indestructible. Put a good WDH on it such as the E2/600 by Fastway and get out and have fun. Save the money you would spend on a Tundra and use it for trips
