We tow with our 2013 Grand Caravan with the pentastar engine. Puts out 283 horsepower. We usually get 13.5 in Vermont and New Hampshire and 14- 16 once we get to Massachusetts and below. Usually go 60 on the interstate.

I loved my '98 Dodge Durango. Don't know much about the new ones but my son has a 2015 with the V-6 and tows a fairly large inboard boat with it with no problem.

My sister as a Honda Pilot which is very nice but gets the worst mileage towing of any car I've ever seen. Towing our 179 at 57 mph on flat level ground we only got 11 mpg.

Have you considered a Jeep Grand Cherokee?  I don't know what your budget is, and if you're considering new or used, but the Eco-diesel has gobs of torque, delivers up to 30 mpg highway (not towing, of course), and is a competent off-road SUV.  My diesel Grand Cherokee is the previous generation, with a Mercedes-Benz engine, but the current crop ('14 and up) have a completely different Italian engine with an 8-speed transmission, delivering more power and better mpg's.  They're pricey, however (which is why we purchased an older one).

Welcome to the group! There have been several folks in the forum that have towed with an fj cruiser. It seemed to serve them well.

Just bought an r-pod and looking for an SUV type vehicle that's good for off-road, comfortable for long distances, and not a truck. Would an FJ Cruiser do the job?
