Topic: R-Dome Mosquito Net / Winter Cover Posted: 23 Feb 2016 at 9:36am |
I am working on our list of options we want when we set out to purchase our new Rpod soon.
I love this forum and have been able to find way more info here then I expected. Far more info than the dealer has been able to provide. Thank you all for an outstanding resource.
Looking at the Rdome and after viewing several Youtube videos, I have not been able to determine if there is mosquito netting that goes along the bottom of the Rpod. What keeps bugs from coming up underneath?
Additionally the winter cover has my interest. I am not yet sure what we will be doing for storage summer or winter. I am thinking the cover would be good to have just to protect the roof against UV rays in the summer, and winter weather we get here in Michigan?
Your thoughts and wisdom will be appreciated regarding these questions
Thank You
Have a Blessed Day

Yes there is a skirt. You have to customize it a bit (cut it) but it's there and handy.
We have a cover, use it sometimes.

Yes there is. We purchased a 2016 179 and it came with an R-dome. In the R-dome box was a long piece of the netting attached to the bead that would go at the bottom of the 179. That's the good news. The bad news is there is no way to work the netting around the steps or up and over the axle/behind the wheel.
I will be exploring ways to utilize the netting.
In our 'Pod' there is my wife, myself and our greyhound. The 179 is just fine for us. We are not new to camping. One of the mods I made was to remove the hassock that was nearest the bed (3 screws)and open up the floor space. I have made numerous other mods and if you search the forum you can find many that are very neat.
Good luck and congratulations.

Thanks David for the reply.
You sure would have thought they would have worked that out by now. Not yet owning an Rpod, I am speaking completely out of ignorance here; could not sheets of material such as sheets of fiberglass be used as skirting around the bottom, much like a mobile home? Regardless i am confident I can come up with a solution.
We are leaning towards the 179 as it seems to fit our needs the best.
We are long time tent campers from primitive to an occasional state or federal camp grounds. I have drug my wife into some out of the way questionable places and now that I am retired its time to move up. The Rpod seems to be exactly what both of us need.
Your mods sound interesting and I will check them out.
Again Thanks for the reply and Have a Great Day

My skirting is made out of clear PVC with fibreglass mesh in it. Not only does it keep out bugs it also keeps out the wind.

marwayne, I like your idea. Do you have any instructions/guidelines on how you did this mod?
Thanks.

Now that looks perfect.
Can you provide more details regarding the product such as;
Where did you get it?
Maybe a close up picture of the product.
Thanks

Great idea using the fiberglass mesh, will have to check out my local hardware store to see if they carry that. We have camped in some real mosquito infested areas in the UP. They even managed to get into our pod from the slide, underneath where the gasket material doesn't cover the metal plate. Stuffed a couple t shirts in that area to block them out, couldn't figure any other way to take care of that problem since there has to be clearance for the slide to work properly. We thought the r-dome would keep out the bugs, but somehow mosquitoes and no-see-ums still manage to sneak in. They are a BUGger!
