Topic: I went left it went right Posted: 23 Jul 2011 at 8:58am |
So, yesterday afternoon we got home, packed up the Z-Pod, hooked it up (I thought) and took off for a quick 1 nighter at our near by state park. A block from the house I heard/felt a sort of bump. Pulled over and checked the hitch and all and things seemed to be OK. Got back in the TV and commened to Janet that my greatest fear was having the trailer "jump" the hitch. I've heard of it happening but it must be so rare that it will probably never happen to us. Went a few more blocks, made the turn onto the main drag, accelerated to 35 (the speed limit) and BANG. Looked behind me and the Pod was bouncing and gyrating in a most unhealthy way. Obviously no longer connected to the TV in the way God intended. Came to a stop and the only apparent damage was a bent sway bar and the bottom of the hitch post was torn up some. No other damage that I could see. Got it hooked back up and came on to the campground. All I keep thinking about is what if I'd been on the interstate doing 60? I may never tow with confidence again. What the heck did I do wrong?

That's scary.
Could you have used a 1 7/8" ball instead of a 2" ball?

I wish it had been that obvious. No, it's the same 2" ball that I've used all along.

I would have to say that you probably had the locking tab riding on the top side of the ball instead of locking onto the bottom side of the ball, in looking at it when it is riding on top you can see the bottom of the ball from the side. I always crank the trailer down onto the ball so that the trailer rolls forward over the top of the ball and dropping down, this way the ball will not push the locking tab up causing the trailer to ride on top, lock the trailer to the ball and then crank the trailer back up a few turns watching to see if it raises the car with the trailer. What happened to you is something that none of us wants to happen, thank goodness it happened at a slow speed. Goose

Goose, we're remembering the hook up yesterday and I bet that's exactly what happened. Every day I learn something new. I just wish my learning experiences weren't so danged expensive. Not to mention dangerous.

One thing that you found out is that the safety chains worked in the manner that they were intended. Goose

On a related subject. After I rehooked, I was concerned that the emergency brake may have been engaged and in checking it, I pulled the plastic piece out of the connection and just pushed it back in until it seated. Was this correct?

The best way to tell that you put things back correctly is to hook up the trailer to your TV, and drive down a quiet side street. If you toggle the manual engagement switch on the electric brake controller, you should feel the trailer brakes engage when you engage the brake switch and release when you let go. If the trailer brakes are on all the time, your emergency switch is still engaged.
As for the ball hitch, I do the same thing as Goose. If you want to double check things, after you think you've connected the ball hitch, crank the trailer hitch jack to lift the trailer a good bit. If the jack lifts both the trailer and the butt end of your TV, you're probably hitched correctly. Visually check everything as Goose recommends, too.

I can't answer that one as this is the first trailer that I have pulled with electric brakes, they are still new to me too.

Wow, I'm getting old. I missed the second part of Goose's post and recommended the same crank-up procedure.
At least our advice is consistent!
